Q: Kernel Panic After Thunderbolt Update

I have a one year old MBP.  A few minutes ago I installed the Thunderbolt Update that Apple released today.  At the conclusion of the update, it said it had failed to install and that I needed to restart the Mac.  On doing so, I got a kernel panic.  And now every time I try to boot, I get a kernel panic.  I'm dead.  Ideas?

Thanks.

That's great however, how about the thousands of Mac users who did not install the Thunderbolt update 1.2 and watched their Macs brought to their knees after installing the 10.7.4 update a month ago?

Apple has neither acknowledged the problem nor fixed it.

    Simply pathetic.

which update was that? I don't recall having a problem with the 10.7.4 combo update.

Interesting moment for Apple. Truly astounding that this slipped through and was approved for distribution. I wasted an hour reinstalling my operating system. Was pleased to not have to reinstall everything else. Yes, I have a superduper backup but that got corrupted as well.

The problem is that we've grown to trust Apple - but this erodes that. I won't be rushing to install updates anymore. I'll be waiting a couple of days and checking these discussions. Honestly, I think they were doing too much at one time. But a couple of these snafu's would not be good.

I've tried this method but it doesn't seem to work. Have you got a screenshot to show what it's supposed to look like?

It'd be easier to answer if you said which step didn't work... Note that alfon does have a warning there about not doing it if you don't understand it!

Instead, try one of the options here: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57451440-263/thunderbolt-update-plaguing-ma cbook-pros-with-kernel-panics/?part=rss&tag=feed&subj=MacFixIt

(By the way, the links I'm getting in notification emails never take me to the correct message and neither does clicking on the links to other messages - eg. "in response to alfon" in Mac-Lion's post takes me to the top of page two and the message I assume Mac Lion is referring to is on page 3)

The method is on the middle of page 6. By mounting the drive and then updating do I need to separate command file or both of them in the same action? I can't tell if I'm doing it right because it doesn't how a percentage bar or anything, I only get a installing was not complete log. I also have the update on disc but once I mount it won't update? Since safe mode doesn't work nor having access to another Mac this is the only option.

Many users had no problem with the update while thousands like myself and my colleagues had to revert back to 10.7.3 due to ongoing kernel panics that made our MacBooks all but unusable.

We are still waiting for Apple to fix that so that we can also update to 10.7.4 - or equivalent - and so far it hasn't happened.

Check the forums. 10.7.4 was - and still is - an unmitigated disaster for many of us.

I am surprised that Apple left out the Mid-2011 15 inch MacBook Pro from the list of affected computers.

I had the problem with exactly that computer, and I had to do a full restore of Lion and furthermore update with the 10.7.4 combi and later updates.

Hi Ulrich, I applaud your response to what obviously came across as rather insensitive , particularly when you know it's not you that was in any way at fault. I find this haughty behaviour prevelant across the web and it's a shame really as let's be honest would you really speak to someone like that if they are stood face to face? The rule of behvaviour surely should be if you you wouldn't do that face to face then don't do it on the web. We all benefit from those who are helpful and have the specific knowledge we may all need from time to time and that's great. What none of us really want or need is condecending behaviour which on only proves counter productive . I was rather pleasanty suprised that an apology was sent in the end , restores a bit of faith in people being able to be decent to one another .

Hi Crabtrem, yes I do make a note of those who helped me , left a voicemail for the apple care chap who had been helping me as it it was his suggestion about  the time machine back up/ restore that won out and got my MBP back to normal. I'm popping over to the store where I took my MBP in the next week or so and will ask to see the mananger and give some feedback as I've been asked to do that. I think it's a nice dose of relality regarding customer service expections and how companies who's products we purchase meet them , or not as the case sometimes is.

    Bluztoo,

As a sidenote to your comment above... I use SuperDuper and it's wonderful in terms of getting a bootable backup quickly. However, as it's doing its thing, as you found out, it will clone bad data too. I was recently "bit in the butt" by SuperDuper inasmuch as my iPhoto Library blew up, SuperDuper cloned it and I ended up spending big bucks getting 13,000 jpegs restored (albeit without the metadata). So, as a word of caution out there to anyone using SuperDuper...it's a great product, but do yourself a huge favor... get another drive (they're cheap) and have TimeMachine running along with it. You'll be glad you did someday!

    Hi Smackntoss,

Thanks for your reply however I tried to install the updates 12th June alas too late to prevent those lost hours, unneeded frustration and I know from this forum I was far from being alone regarding this incident. It's a sorry state of affairs when a company such as Apple  really push out the marketing boat then due to not having their eyes on quality control , make a negative impact on their polished image. As with all reputations , it takes a life time to build and sometimes merely hours if that to destroy !

Customers are not at fault here if you receive a valid notification to upgrade you naturally asume things are safe enough to do so no matter what OS your are using. Apple have stated before  " We've changed things again " and I totally agree they have. Never again will I view the updates or the service the genius bars offer with the same regard I previously had. I'm not sure what those who use their macs , imacs etc to earn living thought about this fiasco and I wonder in what regard they hold Apple's " It just works" slogan now ?

    Hi igrant,

I cannot agree more, i moved over to mac from my pc in December and until 11th June was 100% happy with Apple - it nolonger 'just works'.    I have had endless trouble since then with these kernel panics and have lost all the data on my hard drive and still now after reinstalling Lion from a disc i still get kernal panics if i turn on Time Machine.  I have lost hours and hours of time and irreplacable data.

    Swire,

You shouldn't have lost your data unless you wiped your hard drive or deleted your user before you re-installed Lion. Did you apply the 10.7.4 combo updater afterwards? That *might* fix your other woes although it could be something as simple as a corrupted TM preference file.

    Combo updater is here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1524

    Graham
