I have a factory unlocked iphone 4s running on ios 5.1 and i don't have option on group messaging. I'm on T-mobile. I can send group messages through iMessage but the moment i added non-iphone/non-imessage users, It will be sent as individual messages and replies are individual too. I'd like to have that chat like messaging where the whole group can see all replies in one thread. My friends and I are always group messaging each other but not all of us are using iphones. It would be great if there's a fix on this matter ASAP.

T-Mobile, in the U.S., is not a supported carrier. If you're in the U.S., it's unlikely that you'll see any fixes for issues on TMobile. Try one of the cross platform apps like GroupMe.

Does that mean that Group messaging is carrier dependent? Can it then be modified by updating the carrier bundle? Is GroupMe using the iphone messaging app? Or it uses a stand alone messaging app that requires other parties to have this app to read and send group messages?

Many features are carrier dependent. Yes, GroupMe is a cross platform group text messaging app. All parties would need the app.

Group Messaging in Ios 5.1 has not been fixed. You can turn off Group Messaging in the setup but it does absolutly nothing. If you send out a message to several people and one of the replies it goes to ALL even though  Group Messaging is turned off on all the iPhones. Apple needs to fix this soon.

Apple needs to remove this feature all together, its a complete unknowing invasion of others privacy.  If you send out a group message to 10 people every one of them gets your number even if YOU didn't want them to...

If they want to set this up then they need to offer a TO field, a CC field and a BCC field for those that you KNOW don't want their number splattered around to everyone.

It ****** me off most because I'll get a message from an iPhone user on my Android device and then get random replies from the other recipients, I DON'T NEED TO SEE THAT! and I have no clue that they are replying to a GROUP and I'm sure neither do they since no one informed all these users on what this even does.

Group Messaging in iOS 5.1.1 has still not been fixed. You turn off Group Messaging in the setup but it does nothing. If you send out a message to several people and one replies it still goes to everyone else, instead of just to the sender. All of the people that have complained here and at other sites are just being ignored by Apple. They think that everyone wants to know what everyone else replies, this is for the young crowd that thinks they need to know what everyone else says. Its annoying to the rest of us and should be fixed. May have to start calling these iPhone "Dumb Phones" instead of "Smart Phones" since this should be a simple fix for Apple. At least give us a selection of reply to all or just the sender.

Every Friday I send out a Mass SMS to about 16 people. Just got a iPhone and this past Friday half of them did not get it and I got strange reply's from unknown numbers. Everyone sees the iPhone as a great device, why don't we keep it that way? I ask Apple to at least aknowlage that they see this problem and that they fix it, or that if they are in the processes of fixing it, tell us!

Even though that is true, The way the phone sends the message is the phone's problem.

Here's how you send a group text message. Download ContactsXL3 in App World. I use Verizon and these are the settings one must use:

    Go to Settings

    Hit Messages

    iMessage= on

    Send as SMS= on

    MMS messaging= on

Group messaging = off (if you don't want everyone reading one another's responses)

I'm a nightclub promoter and this app allows me to send a group text message to well over 1,000 people at one time. Download it and you're fine with group text messaging.

Come on Apple, do something about this!!

When I receive a text from my neighbor (not knowing it is a group message) my response goes to everyone (in the group she sent to) without me knowing this. This is wrong!!!!!!!!!!!

You actually do know who its going to, the mesage header has all of the recipeints in it... I find it more of an invasion of privacy to the receipents since the sender, if they pick a large number of people to send this message to, every iPhone or Blackberry user that supports group messaging will get this message INCLUDING the phone numbers of ALL the recipients on the header.

I feel that is the largest issue here.  They are allowing someone to send out your information without your permission... They should set it up as a blind header or mask the other recipents actual number so others don't see it.  And if they don't want to do that then simply INFORM YOUR USER BASE OF THE CHANGE TO THE TXTING ABILITY!  I hate it when info is left out on what was changed in an update.

Also the simple fact that Apple impliments something that not all phones support so anyone who doesn't have an iPhone is more annoyed with it than those with the iPhone.  As I noted on my HTC, I get a single message from the original sender and then I get random replies to that message from other people. I can figure out whats going on but some other users obviously get ****** when they find out some random person is replying to them and now has your number.

Jimmy, your suggestion is fine if your the sender... but I do not think it works if your the recipient of a group message.  Simply said there needs to be two functions for this... Group messaging as it is now to make all of the teenie boppers happy so they can have an iPhone chat room, AND there needs to be a Mass message option that allows you to simply send the same message to a large group of people without it showing up with all of the other phone numbers attached.  You shouldn't have to go dig for a group MMS setting and turn it off every time you want to do that, you should have that choice while composing the message.

And I just realized the ContactsXL app was also giving me problems. I contacted Apple and tried to find some answers from their service reps. The bottom line with mass text messaging is BLACKBERRY has                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     better technology for texting than Apple and Droid does. Apple cannot guarantee 800 text messages sent. They couldn't find anyone who could verify how many you can mass text message at one time. Pretty pathetic if you ask me.

For those catching up to the conversation, my issue is privacy within a mass text message. If I send out a text message to Judy and 300 more of my contacts, my contacts shouldn't be able to read Judy's responses nor responses in general from any of the 300 contacts in the original message.

The problem was all responses were being read by the entire contact list. "Freddy" one of the 300 members receiving the text blast would wind up with 600+ responses on his iPhone. The other issue was the mass text message was freezing recipients within the text group. If would freeze their iPhones/Droids resulting in reboots.

You have the same issue as I do with the group messaging.  As I noted it should be an option for the sender to not have the message become a txting chat room and hide all of the reipient information from others and be simply a "mass message".  But I bet Apple would argue and say thats not the definition of "group txting" and thats why it doesn't function that way.
