I am having that exact same problem since I upgraded to the MacBook Pro Retina. Everything still works on my old MacBook Pro and my iPad works, but I get that same error for my iPhone. Hope someone here can help.

You can always backup with iCloud.

If itunes on your computer doesn't recognize the phone, how do you back it up?
And then how do you restore it?
I see these instructions for backup......... Google returns various things to buy, adjust, tweak, etc.
How to start an iPhone backup:
- Plug your iPhone into your computer
- Launch iTunes
- Select your iPhone in the ‘DEVICES’ list
- Right-Click on your iPhone
- Select “Back Up”
- Wait for iPhone backup to complete
This will create a backup of your iPhone that you will be able to restore from later, and the procedure is the same in Mac OS or Windows. It is a good idea to create a current backup before you download and install the latest iOS version.

You don't need iTunes to back your phone up. You can use iCloud. You can set this up in your phone settings under iCloud. It will back up your pictures (photo stream) and the rest of your data in the cloud. After you reset and erase your phone you will be asked to enter your apple ID and it will also ask if you want to restore from a backup on iCloud. I am assuming the rest of your media is already on your computer. I am no expert on this stuff. It just worked for me.

I think i know the solution for this problem. I had the same problem on my 3gs iphone. I believe the main reason for this error message is due to the fact that you have a jailbroken iphone. If so, the solution is to remove the cydia from your iphone by going to Packages --> cydia installer -- > modify and force remove (unsafe). After removing the cydia restart the iphone, most probably it will be stuck in Apple logo while booting. Now try to put the iphone in DFU mode and restore it in iTunes. iPHONE will restore with no issues.
Disclaimer All the steps mentioned above worked for me, if its not working you, please dont ask me.
NOTE: WHEN YOU DO THE ABOVE STEPS, YOU WILL LOSE ALL THE DATA in the iPHONE, SO make sure you have backup. if you dont have backup dont try this option if your data is very important.

Yes it's JB..thanks it's not finish yet but it's working..I'd made a backup by iCloud then I follow your clever steps!! Now it's only left JB again ..richard PACKAGES: open Cydia > MANAGE > PACKAGES...

hey, if anyone still cares, you can get your data from your computer without restoring using home sharing. Just connect your iPhone and Mac to the same WiFi network, and set up your devices for home sharing. You can then transfer media to and from your devices.

I solved the problem by resetting to factory settings. Since the phone was new to me, it didn't matter much that I didn't have a back-up per say. The contacts that were synched by icloud were automatically put back. I hadn't put pictures or music on it because it hadn't connected. Now I have everything on it, connects to everything, etc.
Once it was reset, it connects fine.
