Then create a new Apple ID just for use here and pick a new user name.

    Hi,

The Hosts do monitor these types of threads.

Mostly the info from the Hosts is as Deggie posts that settings up a new Account and changing the Posting Alias that is suggested to one you want (particularly if you have gained no points here yet)

I say "mostly" as sometimes the Hosts do step in and change the Alias but you have to fulfill certain criteria.

Thanks Deggie, but that is not what I am asking. I am aware that I can setup more accounts.

So does anyone ban accounts or is this thing completely unmoderated?

You asked about changing your username. That is the way it is done.

This is a moderated site, there are hosts. They are the only ones who can change a username and I have only known it to be done 3 times in the time I have participated here. Each time it was because of a very serious and imminent security issue. Each person involved had a large number of points.

Since you have no points you can set up the additional account.

    Hi deggie,

My request is to change my username, not create a new account (username),

But since you suggested that, can I create multiple accounts with the same email address or can I change the email address for my current username?

How about the option to have my account deleted and I reuse the same email address to register again since points is not of concern to me

    cheers

    Hi,

Each Apple ID you create needs a separate email address that can be verified so that it can be set up.

In this manner you many be limited to the number of accounts/IDs you can set up.

As Deggie says the circumstances required for the Hosts to step in and actually make the change is well over the level of remote.

Under the Previous Software the Hosts did not even have the ability to change the Posting Alias.

They do now but rarely use the function.

Some Posts/Posters/Threads that end up having several "names" posting from the same IP normally come to someone's attention and the Hosts get notified about it. (i.e something about the thread alerts someone to notify the Hosts and they can tell if the posts originate from the same place)

Once you get to 150 Points and  Level 2 you can report posts to the Hosts

    https://discussions.apple.com/static/apple/tutorial/reputation.html

I notice that this thread is bookmarked by 14 people.

I would guess that one of those is Matt, the Host that has been involved so far.

    Weak Sauce.

I would like to update this answer from from apple from "cannot be done" to

"we didn't build it to be changed and are too busy with other projects to fix this simple database and html form change".

I agree. This is such a simple change. FORCE people to explicitly choose a username at account creation. And allow people to make one change during the life of their account. How hard can this be?!?!?!

    Umm,

I am seeing this thread listed at the top of the "Using Apple Support Communities" area listing the "Last" poster

Even if I enter the thread and then leave (using the Discussion Link) It still say I have not read it.

In fact I can't read it as it has been removed.

    Edit.

It seems the Last two have not been removed but the Latest post link does not work to get you anywhere near.

Selecting page 10 got me to see my own post.

This is crap! I never even got asked to type a username, i just pressed sign in, it used my existing Apple ID that was created when i bought my iphone, and it seems to have automatically generated this crappy username, its the first time ive seen it, its a privacy issue. Someone could now in effect hunt me down and kill me, stockton on tees is a small place, there cant be that many people called michael, gutted

Hey everyone. On the first page of this thread, if you read it, there is someone who will be able to help. These communities grow and grow and grow. They aren't perfect but simply sending a message and waiting, maybe following up after a reasonable amount of time if there is no reply, will get you some resolve.

It's unfortunate that the sign up process is the way it is, but if there is a legitimate privacy issue there is no way they would be unwilling to help.

Now..... If you forgot to add a character to a username or something to that effect I can see why they wouldn't reply or maybe would reply but would be unwilling to do anything.

Maybe this will change later on. I know that prior to rolling out the new forums there was talk of being able to change usernames but it clearly didn't make it. Maybe in a future update or something but for now, this is what we have.

Again, please re-read the first page of this thread and you should find some info on who to get a hold of to try and get some resolve.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi,

You are correct that the Tutorial on this does not tell you that a Username as they call it is suggested for you on the pages after the pics.

It could do with the pic on the Next page so people can see the Suggested option that can be changed.

    Edit.

With a population of around 83,000 there would in fact be lots of Micheals

    Hi,

Having checked around the time the current software was brought in I was aware that the Posting or UserName for Apple Support Communities used to be a a Suggested name at one point  (The "xxxxfromplacename" format)

I see that this is no so currently

The box is in fact Blank

    Apple Support Posting Name
    Uploaded with Skitch!

However it does clearly sate it cannot be changed
