You have folders named, "vQVxbpD2Q5m5yOhYYvNoFQ", within your file path? Is that new with the latest update because nowhere else in my library, prior to the library update last week, do I see that path structure. I have 104GB of pictures in my library and not once do I see folders named as above...except with photos I've download after the library update.
I'm relatively new to Mac so I'm not up-to-snuff on Console nor Safe Mode. I thought Safe Mode was a PC thing?

I get this from console - I tried to adjust the shadow. It went blank then I reverted to original.

Well that tells us that the issue seems to be at OS level.
CoreImage: highlightsAndShadows: fragment program failed to compile
Core Image is the part of the OS that apps like Preview, iPhoto and Aperture use to do some of their work.
I would start by downloading and re-applying the 10.7.4 update again. If that fails then you're reinstalling 10.7 and applying the updates to bring it to .4

I reinstalled the 10.7.4 update - this did not solve the issue!
Looks like I need to reinstall the entire 10.7. I will keep you posted.

Reinstalling Lion didn't work for me either. I was able to solve my problem though. Here's what I did:
1. Restored iPhoto library from Time Capsule to a day before the Library upgrade.
2. Trashed iPhoto
3. From Finder used the Go menu and selected Go To Folder and typed in /var/db/receipts. Deleted all iPhoto pkg files
4. Went to HD/Library/Application Support folder and deleted iPhoto 11
5. Installed new iPhoto 9.0 -> upgraded to 9.1 -> upgraded to 9.2.3
Now I can use my shadows and highlights sliders without the image going black. I WILL NOT UPGRADE TO 9.3.
