In the Mailbox press Edit (top right), press the message(s) you want to add the blue dot to, press Mark (bottom right) and then "Mark us Unread".

I understand that action, but I didn't make my concern clear. In the past I have had a blue dot beside all new, unread mail. Since yesterday, the new mail appears as if already opened.

Do you have your email account set up on a computer or device other than your iPad?

Yes We have an iMac with the same account. They have both worked fine for the year that we have owned an iPad. I think I have solved the problem. I went into mail settings and turned off push. Then I reset the iPad. Upon reopening, I turned push on again. At least for the last 15 minutes, I have a blue dot bt new mail. Many thanks for taking the time to help me, Matthew.
