Q: Retina MBP - visual glitches after returning from sleep

Hi, I know I've been following this thread since it was created. He said "I have experienced this same problem. But for some reason the burn in is only noticeable when the screen is black." If it's image retention this is not a software issue anymore and he has to return the machine ASAP to get a new one.

There is software which let you know which one is used and even you can control which one you want to be used.

Called Apple UK/USA to escalate the problem to 2nd line. the issue occurs when the system switch in saving mode from Nvidea to Intel using the automatic switching

Visited the genius bar and they opened a case for me that references this thread and oldmaster78's video (thanks for posting that). Since I have an upgraded MBPR, he couldn't exchange it and advised me to call apple care, refer them to the open case and go from there.

FWIW, I haven't had any issues when automatic switching is disabled or when running wired with a full charge. I've only had it happen with switching enabled while running on battery with frequent sleeps.

Called Apple and they're blaming it on "apps that haven't updated to support the retina display". I am *not* happy.

This really seems to be a software issue, so don't be mad ad Apple for not wanting to replace your RMBP. Although it's more likely caused by OS software and not 3rd party apps. There were similar issues in the past: when Lion first came out and, occasionally, when new Mac models came out using a different graphics processor. Let's hope there's a software update soon.

That's not true ...they should exchange it , these machines are very expensive and this could be either bad screens or drivers that causing this issue.

The issue isn't screen related and drivers are software.  An exchange won't help unless you get a different model computer.

I've identified three apps that can cause this behavior:  Chrome, StockSpy, Steam

This computer will be a little problematic until software can be updated or Apple addresses with an OS/driver update.  They definitely should be able to address this no matter what 3rd party software is doing, so I don't buy that explanation.  I've even had it occur with only Apple software running.

I'd say if you are not into putting up with this, which is completely understandable, you should return it before you're outside your 14 day "no questions asked" period.

k.e.j: not mad at Apple (I knew the risk of buying something brand new), but I'm not happy! I've been hobbling with a 5 year old MBP for 8 months just waiting for the refresh so it's more than a little disappointing that my new expensive shiny toy has issues.

I think I'm just going to hang in there and see what happens. If it is a software issue, I suspect that Vmware Fusion would be highly suspicious in my case.

Brenda: same here. I've waited to replace my old MBP till the announcement, and ordered this new baby on day one. I too would rather have it problem free, but - looking on the bright side - it reboots so fast, that putting up with this glitch is not unbearable.

I'm also trying out another possible solution:

I've set all my suspect apps to use low resolution (Get Info; check 'Open in low resolution' in the general section). So far so good, but it's a bit early to declare victory.

Have you tried turning on the full 2880 x 1440 resolution and seeing if the same thing happens after you wake? You need to use the "Change Resolution" app found below:

Apple is contacting MBPr owners about this issue; I've been personally contacted by Apple Care representatives.

Edit: I should clarify - I've been contacted as a result of this thread. I didn't reach out to them myself.

I've been experiencing the same, and would love to be contacted by Apple regarding the issue.

I also was contacted personally because of this thread.... (un)Fortunately my mac hasn't been getting into this glitch mode very much lately. I tried a number of things while Apple rep was on the phone, but no luck...

But at least I now know who to send some screenshots to.

I just found out how to put the screen into it's highest res mode (2880x1800), which the Apple display system preference app doesn't allow (it's highest is 1920x1200)...   I am now very pleased with this computer. Too bad Apple in their wisdom(????) thinks the display app shouldn't give users the option of 2880x1800.  Stupid!  Glad there are third party people to the rescue.
