Hi,

My entire iTunes music folder is missing. An "!" appears next to every song I try to play in iTunes. My playlist is still in iTunes but I can't locate any of the music. I tried searching for a song on all my hard drives but couldn't find it. The inside of my iTunes folder looks like this: Screen shot 2012-06-27 at 8.38.43 PM.png

What happened? Can this be fixed?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    Hi,

The same exact thing just happened to me. Is there anyone out there that can explained what caused this problem?

It's not gone. For some reason it is not showing up as a folder as it should (along with Album Artwork, Mobile applications and Previous iTunes libraries).

Insert your System install DVD, restart and hold the C key to boot from this DVD.

Run Disk Utilities and repair the drive.

When I purchased my iMac last Nov/2011 I did not receive any install media. The box had only the computer, keyboard, mouse and trackpad. When I plugged it in and connected to my existing network a download began to update to the latest OS version.

The .xml file that I found seems to be what is used to keep track of the music library.

I come from a windows world and this is completely foreign to me. All I've read has not helped me to figure out where the physical files are stored and there is confusion in the Apple help on importing music and where it is stored.

In any case, I did not receive any system install DVD.

I ended up deleting all the exclamation pointed entries under the Music in iTunes and starting over. Although I did figure out how to get the music to my iPhone so at least if it happens again I will have my music.

So you are running Lion (10.7,x)?

Boot from the Recovery disk and run Disk utility then repair the drive.

Restart and hold Command R to boot from the recovery drive

The .xml file that I found seems to be what is used to keep track of the music library.

But that is created by iTunes only for other applications to access the iTunes library.

The OS is not recognizing the folders and that needs to get fixed. It's not an iTunes issue (at this point).

Yes, my iMac is running 10.7.4.

I don't have a recovery disk. When I purchased this iMac from Apple last year it did not come with any CDs.

Yes you do have a recovery disk .

The recovery disk is a partition on your HD. It is installed as part of Lion.

Restart and hold Command R to boot from the recovery drive.

Ok through this whole disussion I did not know you were referring to a partitioned drive. Earlier when I said I did not receive any disks with the computer you kept referring to a recovery disk.

I ended up deleting all the references under Music that had the exclamation point and starting over by copying the musich back. So far after several days they all seem to be there but I guess I still need to do some recovery of some sort because everytime I open iTunes I get two errors, one referring to the firewall and the other regarding an application wanting/needing access and requesting me to Allow/Deny.

So at this point my issue seems to have changed into something else.

I've looked through the other discussions and for the 'this track is damaged and cannot be played' that I now receive on the SD card when I insert it into my Audi Q5 card slot. I've only found a few postings on getting music from iTunes to the SD card to play in the car, which is how all this started.

So thanks and now I'm off to find out how to resolve all the problems that I am having at least after getting music onto the SD card.

Hi, sorry for the delay on my response.

I tried the repair instructions and still nothing. my itunes info is on an external HD btw.

    I'm also running snow leopard.

    Anything else I should try?

Hold the option key while launchng itunes and then point it to the  library you want to use. By default it created a new library on your music folder on your boot drive.
