Is the CD you are trying, blank? If not, what is the nature of it (Data? Music?, Format? Brand?)
First of all, nothing is going to show up "just plugged in", unless you insert a Mac readable disk. The Superdrive can be format & brand sensistive.

Thanks for the reply. I should have specified it is not a blank CD...I tried many music CDs, which work fine in my other Mac. The Superdrive rejects everything.

A number of users have had this issue because the superdrive was upside down. They were basically putting the CD in "upside down". Silver side up.
I Apologize in advance, just thought I'd throw it out there...
