Whenever I am working on a Motion project, I get the spinning wheel of death and the app. starts to slow down.  I have caches set to 80% of memory.  I am using Motion 5 on an early 2011 MacBook Pro with 8 gigs of Ram and 2.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor.  This certain seems enough computer to run Motion 5 but I always run into a slowdown.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Motion will bog down laptops very fast with the amount of GPU processing work it has to do.  More RAM would help.  But since you can't update the GPU, you're pretty much stuck with what is in that machine, which barely powerful enough for serious Motion work.

    Sad that apple would produce programs that do not run well on their most advanced laptops.

    Iburech, even with more gpu and a faster machine, this program still needs some grouth We are running it with an ATI HD Radeon 5870 with 8 cores Mac pro and she still has to perform with many other areas set in place to help performance during the creative process. Learning how to disable certain areas not needed at the time and rendering out and inporting again and other factors are all nessesary to accomplish a finished project with less

    problems through it's course.

    Motion is not designed as a video editor, nor is it expected to run at full frame rates when you load it down with emitters and a lot of extra content with animation. It's a compositing application. It takes considerable work for Motion to create each frame, especially in "real time". Motion does, however, attempt to rasterize as much as it can for playback and if you let the project play several times through, you should notice a framerate improvement (depending of course on the complexities it has to deal with... and hardware.)

     

    With this 1st statement I still believe that Motion 5 should perform Much Better than she does before bogging !

     

    Some things you can do to help speed things up: turn off the preview icons in the layers list [View > Layers Column > Preview].  Go to the Group(s) containing emitters and set Fixed Resolution (this will keep Motion from rendering particals past the boundaries of the canvas [sometimes it helps to *isolate* emitters into their own subgroup].) Also for emitters, keep the birth rate down to a small number - you can turn it up later for the final effect (this includes animated airbrush Strokes which are essentially the same thing). (For 3D with cameras and lights:) turn off Lighting, Shadows, Reflections, and Frame Blending from the Render menu while you work (you can turn these on for export from the Export dialog > Render tab). Turn off layers that aren't required for your "current edits" (in other words: only turn on the layers that you need to focus on at any given point in your development.) You can also just turn off filters on layers until they're required. [You don't have to do all of these all at once... but knowing your options and "scaling back" visible portions or items and/or effects with high rendering requirements (anything that Rasterizes! like Extrude, etc.) as you go will help maintain sanity ]

     

    It is a very rare Motion project that will play back at full framerate.

     

    I don't agree with this statement because how does one sync their work without the program behaving ? This is true that it rarely runs at full framrate, but this is just not up to par with the few items only allowed before bogging. This has been a real challenge for us. When we worked with adobe programs on the pc,,, it smoked Motion 5, but keeping in mind the fram rate was lower, but the trade off has got us thinking. We almost always have to have it run at full frame rate with building music videos,,,,,,,,,below are true work arounds,,, but a pain

     

    If you absolutely have to see the project at full speed, you can export (with all required Render options — Motion will "remember" what changes you make in the export dialog on subsequent exports) at "Current Settings" (which *should* be ProRes 4444). While you're developing the project, Motion can be made to overwrite the exported video, and when you're done, just throw it in the trash (unless you need it for something else.)

     

    This gentleman had a lot of good information that is true, but believe this as well,,,,we live in this program and have built 70 or more professional projects at this point and we still FIGHT with everyone to some degree. We are hopefull they will work on the matrix with upgrades, but Apples Heart right now is on portable divices and the video editors are not so important due to you tube and the ability to post anything and any level of quility for free. This is why Apple condenced this program,,to hopefully bring new folks just beginning and reaching this multitude of available people who post stuff without quility, and get them on board at the beginning of a new software launch. Very smart indeed. Conclution: video editors are not in as much need and one must know that he or she is called to this work because anyone now can build a movie with presets on their iphone. Convienence almost always wins over quility,,,,but does it really? I believe not, and will continue to create good quility presentations no matter what the world is doing. Having a program that will help in this is the next step.
