You've given us virtually no details but at a guess you have opened a blank Layout mode template and not created any textboxes in which to paste.
There are 2 kinds of templates:
Word Processing have a default text area set between the margins, this flows from page to page.
Layout are essentially blank slates on which you have to place Textboxes and Shapes into which you then add content.
The 2 kinds of template are labeled in the sidebar of the Template Chooser.
When you hit a problem don't just give up, try something different to test what is going on. Instead of trying to paste text, try an image or object, create a few objects and see what happens with those.

I've created a blank word processing doc and attempted to copy and paste your reply into the document. no go. Then I created a textbox and attempted to copy and paste into the text box- no go. I then tried the text edit app and it would not copy or paste either. I've tried the template chooser and picked a word processor document, and nothing will copy and paste there either.

It sounds more & more like corrupt Pages preferences. Go to HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences & delete the com.apple.iwork.pages.plist & then restart Pages. The user's Library is hidden in Lion but it is easy to open. In Finder, hold down the Option key while clicking on the Go menu & your user Library will appear about halfway down the list.
