So, you're saying that it won't play the songs "in order"?  No matter how you set the switch on the iPod shuffle, it always plays the songs in random order (shuffle).

Which shuffle model is it?  I guess it is has playlists, it must be 3rd or 4th?

I want it to play in order, how it is in itunes.  I thought the left mode (all green) mode is for shuffle.  And the middle mode green/grey is for play in order.  All grey is off.  3rd generation, I think, the square one.  Please don't tell me it ONLY shuffles.

The square one is 4th gen, but 3rd and 4th gen are functionally similar.  It has one switch, and you are correct.  The middle "notch" should be play in order.  All the way over, is shuffle.

Where are you looking in iTunes?  To see the order of the songs on the shuffle, select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Click the triangle next to the shuffle there, to see the "drop down" iTunes media categories indented under the shuffle.  If you have playlists, they should appear there as well.

Select that one playlist there.  Over to the right, you should see the list of songs, in the order they should play (when you use play in order on shuffle).  If you have the shuffle set to manually manage music (you drag songs to the shuffle in iTunes to load), you should be able to drag the songs around on that list to change the order. <OR> If you have the shuffle set to sync automatically, then you cannot change the order there, but the order the songs appear there should reflect the iTunes playlist that is being synced automatically; change the order on the iTunes playlist and sync the change.

ok, getting really close.  Your tips were helpful.  In Itunes, devices and "my Ipod", I see two items:  Music with a music symbol and my one playlist.  When I look at the playlist, the order is fine.  When I look at the music folder, the order is by artist and aplhbetical.  I know this because there is a triangle by the artist column and the songs are in order by artist name.  This is the order that I get when play the ipod.  So how do we change this order?  I have tried to modify the order the music folder of the Ipod, but everything is grey and can not be modififed.  I go back to check the library, to albums and the order is correct.  I eliminate the playlist in the Ipod  and all is left is the music folder with nothing in it.  The music icon is still there, with nothing in it but I notice that the artist column is still set to arrange the songs by artist.  I believe I need to find a way to modify the way this music folder is set up.

If you want to play the playlist in the order shown on the playlist (in iTunes), you should go into the playlist on the shuffle, instead of playing the songs from the main All Songs list.  You only have one playlist on the shuffle right now, so your one playlist and All Songs list have the same songs.  But normally, you might have multiple playlists on the shuffle, and the way to play a specific playlist is to select that playlist on the shuffle.

You select the playlist on the shuffle by pressing hand holding the VoiceOver button on the shuffle.  This article has the details

Since you said the playlist order is correct in iTunes, when you go into the playlist on the shuffle to play songs, it should be in that same order.
