Sure, don't use Automator (or, at least, if you use Automator, use a shell script action).
curl -O http://www.xxx.com/abc_[000-100].mp3
Curl will take care of the download, incrementing the numbers automatically.

If I want to save the files to my desktop or a specific directory, what do I need to write?
curl saves the files in the current directory. If you want to save the files in a specific directory, just cd to that directory first:
cd /path/to/downloads; curl -O http://www.xxx.com/abc_[000-100].mp3
Should I be using the script in applescript editor instead of automator?
That's an option - although an Automator workflow that contains a single AppleScript or shell command is perfectly valid.
