Q: Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

Very true but even making it as far as them admitting they must actually repair the computer,

rather than dance around the issue and delegate blame, is a major accomplishment

Make sure they put the new revision board in 661-6362

rather than old problematic one 661-5566.

    Good luck.

    Hi again CodeNemo and apple242,

    CodeNemo...is this logic board replacement for a MBP 15" Mid 2010 or a 17" Mid 2010?

    apple242...is logic-board 661-6362 for both a MBP 15" Mid 2010 and 17" Mid 2010?

FYI...the MBP Video Update 1.0 @ http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1469 is only for the 15". I tried to load it only my 17" and it failed to proceed.

Thanks for the updates and I hope your problem is fixed soon, CodeNemo.

    Hi,

@apple242: How can I check/control the version of logic board they integrate in my MBP? You look an Apple HW expert!

    Have a good WE!

Just ask them what revision of the logic board they installed.

Technically there shouldn't be old ones floating around but you never know.

Also make sure that they reset your serial number to the original (about this mac / more info).

They must set it manually and sometimes they forget.

I've been having the same exact problem. I've taken it into a couple Genius Bars around the Seattle area and they won't do anything about it. I feel like I just tossed $1800 in the toilet. Among that I have a few other hardware failures that they also can't/won't fix.

Apple's customer service has been unreliable at best in my experiences.

    Hi,

I got my MBP yesterday, They were quick considering that all HW is coming from the Nederlands.

I fully tested at home and it seems to work. It was the Logic boardthen, as we all know from the beginning :-)

@Angelxaces: if you have the computer and problem described here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088 they

have to replace the faulty part!  In my case the first time I went there they did a test and no failure appeared. When I went there again showing this TS4088 and letting the MBP freezing in front of them they did an "extended" Apple test (no idea about the difference) where the logic board failure appeared!

Of course the MBP must be less than 2 years old.

    Cheers

I'm another disappointed mid 2010 15" mbp user having the same issues with nvrm panics. Please add me to the list Apple as there appears to be an ever increasing number of us that have been sold dodgy machines! And at nearly 2 grand, I feel pretty p***ed at a company I used to respect!

All in all it's been about a year since it first started. Sometimes it would be weeks between crashes, more recently it has become several a day sometimes.

The genius at my local store dismissed it (as many people have already reported on this thread already), I'm out of warranty, and need my machine for work.

Thankfully i didn't upgrade to 10.7 as i wanted to wait for the bugs to be ironed out. It sounds like I was right as I believe it has got worse for people who did upgrade. And my card is the 330m, which seems to be the same card as pretty much everybody else on here.

I can't offer much help to anybody (possibly removing the 'windowserver' file in preferences helped, but who knows yet), but I mainly just wanted to stand up and be counted so that Apple see how many of us have been let down by them.

Hi guys I'm also having the kernel panic/black screen problem, not only with skype but also when hooking up my machine to an overhead video. It blacked out twice in a row, pretty embarrasing while I was giving a keynote speech at a university. I was forced to use someone else's older 2010 model instead.

Is Mac just ignoring us here and is it safe to say the genius bar will not help?

Interesting, I went to Apple store in Houston Galleria. They ran the diagnostic on the 25th of June, detected the error on the board and took in MBP 2010 15". Today, I got back the machine, and in the work order, it shows that it replaced "logic board 2.4Ghz" with item number 661-6360 (guess not as new as yours, ending in 6362). The point is..now the boot process is extremely slow, and Apple Genius considered that as normal. *sigh*

At least the repair is free though. Hope it does not introduce more issues.

I've decided to post my panic reports every time this happens (although, as it happens so often, i might end up spending more time on here than doing the work i switch my mbp on for in the first place).

It may be a bit boring for general readers but maybe it'll help to make apple sit up and take notice.

for the last 2 mornings, when i switched my machine on to start the day of work, it's gone almost straight to the black screen/lit keyboard/fan sound/unresponsive state. no 3rd party software has been launched as there wasn't even a chance to do so.

tomorrow (or next time in crashes today) i will reboot without my (old style) hd cinema display attached to see if that helps - even though i've 'been there, done that' before.

    Hi,

    in my previous post:

    <<

if you have the computer and problem described here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088 Apple

has to replace the faulty part!  In my case the first time I went there they did a test and no failure appeared.

    >>

Go to an apple store and ask for an extended hardware test. The fault in my logic board was discovered this way and then replaced for free within 3 days.

    Hope it helps!

    thanks codenemo,

the 'black screen' problem was what i first thought my problem was.

i took my machine to the local genius bar and apparently my mbp was made just before the batch that apple/nvida are accepting have the problem, and therefore called it a 'software issue'. of course, that doesn't strictly mean it isn't the same problem, but it does mean that apple aren't currently recognising it or accepting it as a 'known issue'.

not knowing wherelse to turn, i googled the 'nvrm read error....' which led me to this (and a number of other similar) discussions.

i'm travelling to china with it next week (hope it holds out on me and it doesn't end up crashing and making me look stupid - or worse, loosing everything!) but i think i might get an extended hardware test done, as you suggest, soon after my return.

otherwise, i guess we just have to hope apple is paying attention to all of us that have given them a lot of our hard earned money........

    Hi CodeNemo & All,

The latest about my Mid-2010 17" MBP panic problem:

    1. Morphed into an Integrated (Intel) graphics tearing and distortion problem on the day I took it to the Genius (that's Murphy's Law for you).
    2. Genius saw this problem & verified that the logic board was the root cause. As TS4088 was only about the 15", the Genius was not able-to or allowed to endorse my MBP 17" for $free repair. Further, the graphical hardware test conducted did not show the problem. However, they noted the problem and referred me to Apple Care.
    3. Apple Care listened and agreed to further Apple Engineering assessment.
    4. Since 26/06, trying 2 versions of "Capture Data" software (the latter worked), the extended hardware test halted on error "4SNS/1/40000000:Tm0-60.125" and after 23 emails, I'm still awaiting Apple Engineering's assessment.

So all, I'm getting close to a conclusion to put a new logic board for $free. However, if this does not happen then the cost of replacement is around AU$700.
