Jul 10, 2012 4:44 PM in response to Pattby augustfromva,If the gears turning its still trying to load the os. Try booting off of a system disk and then running disk utility. If you don't have a system disk handy, boot holding down ⌘-s, for single user mode. At the command prompt type "diskutil verifyVolumne /". After that type "diskutil verifyPermissions /". Usually you can get the GUI to boot after running those two commands.
