    Contact iTunes.

Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us

What happens when you try to download the update? Error message?

I also have a similar problem.

I have an iPod touch 1st gen with iOS 2.2.1.

On my account, 2 years ago I purchased the iOS3.1 update.

When I click on the link from HT2052, iTunes recognizes that I have already purchased the update and tells me to

just click on Download to get it again for free.

I click on Download, and I get a "Thank you, your update is now downloading page", but nothing ever starts downloading.

If I go to the iPod directly, it says that its software is up to date.

If someone can help with this I'd appreciate it very much!

I am haing the same problem as andreadbc, and have read many threads which all poitn to the same link that takes me through the same frustrating cycle.  Does anyone know how to make the software actually download and be usable?  I've paid, adn would like to upgrade.

Unfortunately, no, but to be honest, my love hate relationship with Apple has me rather ambivalent at this point...to their products, their predatory forced upgrade programs and organization as a whole.  If someone finds the answer and I stumble upon it, I'll likely take advantage of it, but I'm done looking for this answer, and pretty close to being done with Apple.  In fact, I'm writing this on an iPad one, and am counting the days until this, too, has been abandoned.

Can you tell I'm a little bitter.  :).  FWIW, I do sincerely wish you well in finding the answer...I'm just frustrated with the way Apple, and most consumer companies, reward their most valuable/repeat customers by making their otherwise slick and useful products needlessly obsolete.  truly, it's shameful.

The day that I posted I was on the phone with Apple technical service for a long time (they insisted that it was an iPod problem and it was way out of warranty, but I managed to convince them that this was an iTunes problem) and they promised that they would get back to me -- they never did.

I was annoyed by all this, but I knew that I just needed the file (iPod1,1_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw). Let's say a friend sent me the file (which I'd already purchased and just couldn't redownload from iTunes).

Then I copied the file to the corresponding folder

    Win XP: C:\Documents and Settings\(account name)\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates

    Win 7: C:\Users\(account name)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates

    Mac: Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates

and finally restored the iPod and it updated to 3.1.
