HELP!! I have an HP mini and I am trying to sync my itunes with my iphone 4s.  It has been on step 2 of 6 for the past 2 hours, how long should it take to completely sync? I have uninstalled and reinstalled itunes and still it is taking forever.  Is this normal?  Is there a step I am missing somewhere? I am not the most patient person in the world so this is driving me crazy, I am all about instant gratification.  Any advice would be helpful!

It should not take that long.  Cancel the sync by clicking on the "X" to the right of the status indicator at the top of iTunes.  What does iTunes report "Step 2" to be?

Under step 2 it says "backing up".  Is there a step by step process you could give me to follow so that I can sync properly?  I took my computer to the Geek Squad and they advised me to uninstall and reinstall itunes and then try syncing my iphone but nothing happens...very frustrating!

    Assuming you have Windows:

    1. Quit iTunes.
    2. Start an elevated command prompt (Start Menu>All Programs>Accessories>right-click "Command Prompt">choose "Run as Administrator")
    3. Once in the command prompt, type "netsh winsock reset" and press ENTER
    4. Reboot your computer
    5. Restart iTunes
    6. Connect your phone and try syncing again.

If this doesn't fix it you probably have a corrupt iPhone backup from a previous sync that must delete it. To do this go to iTunes Preferences, on the Devices tab you will see a list of your backups.  Click each one and click Delete Backup.  Then try syncing again.

BTW, don't include the quote marks when you type "netsh winsock reset"

I have followed all of the steps up to restarting itunes and now that I have plugged iphone back in a message pops up asking me if I want to dowload and update software 5.1.1, should I download and update or cancel this request?  I do not want to press the wrong button and have it mess up the possible itunes sync.

Cancel it.  You can update later if you wish by connecting to iTunes and clicking on Check For Updates on the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings.  Let's solve the syncing problem first.  The backup step shouldn't take more than a 5 minutes (and often doesn't take more than a minute); if it goes longer then it's probably stuck again so cancel the sync as you did before.

You're welcome.  One final tip... before updating your iOS, be sure to do two things:

    1. Import your photos to your computer (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083)
    2. Back up your contacts, either by syncing them with Address Book or with iCloud (Settings>iCloud, turn Contacts to On)

Losing photos and contacts are the two most common issues I see from users who update or restore their phones.

I have the same problem, but am running Mac 10.6.8 software and iPhone 5 software.  What would you suggest?

If your syncing is stuck on step 2 (backing up), open iTunes on your computer, go to Preferences, on the Devices tab click on your most recent backup, click Delete Backup, then try syncing again.

No, it gets stuck on syncing contacts.  It takes up to 10 minutes to sync.  I have only about 1300 contacts and they dont change much over time.  Any thoughts?

What are you syncing your contacts with on your computer?  Outlook?  Other?

I use the mac Address Book program.  I am on a Mac.

If the contacts in Address Book are up to date, try replacing the contacts on your phone with the contacts in Address Book.  To do this:

    1. Without connecting your phone, open iTunes on your computer and go to Preferences.  On the Devices tab check "Prevent...from syncing automatically".
    2. Connect your phone to your computer, go to the Info tab on your sync settings and confirm than your have checked to Sync contacts with Address Book.  Then, further down under Advanced: Replace information on this iPhone, check Contacts.  Click Apply at the bottom to sync your phone.
    3. After syncing go back to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and re-enable automatic syncing.
    4. Sync you phone again to see if it syncs normally now, without getting hung on syncing contacts.
