Could just be a fully cache, corrupt software files, or a damaged/faulty hard drive. If the problem continues, try to restore your iPod to factory settings.
When it does freeze, make note of the track it has frozen on to determine if only certain tracks in particular are having this issue.

Sorry I took so long to reply to you....if it is just an inherently messed up hardrive, is there anything I could do to fix it or would I have to get a new iPod? I've resored my iPod a couple of times and it seems to help, but my iPod still freezes once in a while. And keeping track of what songs it freezes on is a good idea! I will have to try that. Thanks for all your help.

If the iPod is still under a year old, I would consider having it replaced while it is still under its 1 year warranty against manufacturing defects. It will not cost you anything.
