My macbook pro runs Lion, the latest version.

For some reason, apple mail program starts up, and it is a program I have never used, nor do I plan to.

I made a trip into the store and they did a quit, but of course, that doesn't solve the problem.   No real

answer for why its starting, who/what starts it, and how to prevent it.

Each time its running I have to click 2-3 dialogue boxes before it will let me quit, and it prevents the machine

from going to sleep if its running and I'm not aware of it.

Apple told me they were using the mail program to synch between the iphone and the machine.   Although I did

install cloud, I do not use it.  My machine has so many problems, ever since I bought it, and I have had so many

trips to the apple store, without real explanations or solutions.   What has happened to the great produce we

knew and loved?    Complexity and the post-modern era are upon us.

I have logged 71 hours of tech support time on the iphone, so I no longer work on trying to solve that problem.

I actually work for a living and have no time for this.   The sad thing is I am in a position to recommend products

for my employer and some major new budgets in the health sector.  I loved my mac for years and years.. always

buying a mac, making arguments for macs when all around me had pc's, etc.    Now I am starting to doubt the mac.

I hope that by participating in the mac community there will be some simple answers, and I don't have to spend HOURS

of frustration for things that should not be a problem in the first place.    We bought apple one-one, but the website never

works, and although they told me to call to make the appointment, it is just the general number and there is 45 minutes

of scratchy music with someone who does not know how to make one-one appointments....

Sorry to ***** and moan here....       I'm sure I'm not the only one having these frustrations.

    When does it launch?

You have looked to see if it's in the list of Login Items in your account preferences haven't you?

I think you are. This is not a place to rant and complain. It will just encourage people to give you unhelpful responses. If you want to complain, go elsewhere. If you want help, ask for it.

For example, can you explain what those dialog boxes actually say? Regardless of who is starting Mail, it will not prevent your machine from sleeping.

There are several dialog boxes.   All from mail.  They are not the issue for me.

What I am concerned about is that why the sudden change... it never happened before

and I don't normally use mail.  I have had this machine for 6 months and suddenly

for no apparent reason I wake it up from being in sleep mode and it has an error that it

could not shut down/hibernate/etc   because mail would not finish, and mail does not finish

because it throws up error dialogue boxes that need replies.   Exactly what those are does not

    matter.

The machine has erratic behavior in general.   Sometimes when it comes back to life after

sleep mode, it has a strange pixelated pattern on the screen.  I have taken it into apple 3x,

and each time they update the OS to the next version but it continues to have the prob.

There is a specific question about mail.

You'd be surprised how important it is to express one's feelings about the problems on our

machines.      Unless you are a robot, and for all we know, you are?

I have had the machine 6 months and this started out of nowhere.  I did not look there but I will.  Not sure

    how it got turned on.

I took 2 hours of my time to go in to the store for a genius appt to sort it out, they didn't think of that,

    so thanks.

A friend said that Apple uses the  mail program to synch files between the phone and icloud

and that might be how mail started running on my machine, because recently the icloud settings on the iphone changed, so that the mobile me functionality, find my phone, could be supported by icloud.     I was at the store and I think they made some changes to cloud settings.   I was surprised at some of the settings,

as in a previous visit, they were set differently.

Its just too complicated in a way.  I have other work to do, can't spend too much time, but its a problem.

Thanks for your reply.  It was helpful.

Once again, have you checked your log in items in your user account. No one can help if you do not follow the advice given and just rant.

    Thanks

OK Mr. Logic.  Thanks for that.

JEEZ.  You guys.  Take it easy.     Why so harsh.    Remember when people ask for help

they are already being POUNDED by a crappy machine problem, so if you also POUND on them,

    its not helping.  FYI.

No its not in the login.

Are there changes that happen now automatically as a result of having turned on the cloud?

When it happens again, I will make a note of the error messages.   Usually I'm in a hurry to get something

    done.

Its my first time posting, so I get it now.  You guys want facts and just the facts.   Maybe there is a computer

program somewhere that we can feed facts into and no human ness is required.

How to lose friends and influence silence. No further help here with your attitude.

Bye and Good Luck. Think you'll need it.

Hi Gloria, I'm sure you're frustrated but we can all get that way at times. If when you get these replies you'll be able to see who wrote them. Try and reply to them individually so we can all keep track of what's going on.

I suspect the people who have replied have not heard of the problem you have hence the seemingly exasperated request for info.

If you want to avoid having to write down what it says on a pop up window you can take a screen shot, (assuming there is nothing sensitive on screen)? There's a discussion on it here.

I've highlighted the main keys on the below virtual keyboard.

Do you know how to insert them into this web page?

This is a technical support forum. It is not a place to express any feelings. When people start expressing feelings, it turns into an official rant thread. Once that happens, everyone will take the opportunity to express their feelings. I can guarantee that a rant thread will neither help you feel any better nor get your computer fixed.

Welcome to ASC, Gloria. You appear to have already met the local hoods...

If you don't want to run Mail it sounds as if you need to turn off Mail in iCloud Preferences.

    Try going to

     > System Preferences... > iCloud

and unchecking the box next to 'Mail'.

etresoft, I think you are being unnecessarily harsh to gloriastitz. She is frustrated and doesn't understand computers at the level you do. What she is experiencing is frustrating, so she is frustrated. I have been a help-desk professional for over 15 years now, and emotions are part of the business.

I know it has been over 6 months since gloriastitz posted her reply. I hope she got a useful answer, but I fear we have satisfactorily scared her away from seeking help.

So, the first best response to tell someone is that the problem they are experience is almost certainly fixable, but may require more information to solve. You tell them you understand their frustration (even if you personally don't experience frustration or don't understand why people my express frustration publicly about a problem that frustrates them). It's just good protocol.

Then you work with the person to break down the problem into steps. If you don't have a ready answer and don't think you might even know the answer with sufficient data, then back out and leave it to others to tackle.

I've been having a similar problem with my Mail program. The cause is still unclear to me after vieweing the logs and changing settings where I know them to be. There appears to be a setting that is not clearly placed in any of the typical UI locations for initiating the desired action for either a feed: or mailto: call.
