I apologize if this is the wrong community for htis question.

I am trying to setup my home network.  This is what I have to work with;

Computers:

1.     Mac Mini

2.     Macbook Pro

3.     Older 20" iMac (White one).

4.     Older Macbook

5.     Windows XP Laptop - (Work)

6.     Two iPhones

7.     iPad 2

External

1.     2 TB External hardrive

2.     Airport Extreme (18 months old)

3.     42" Sny Flatscreen

4.     Various cables

5.     Epson WorkForce 845 All in One Printer.

6.     Apple TV 2

Here is what I would like to do.

I want the Mac Mini to be hooked up directly to the AIrport Extreme.  The Mac Mini will also be hooked up to the Sony TV.

I am debating to hook up the external Harddrive to the Mac Mini or the Airport Extreme.  I wanted to put all my media on this and to also have iTunes on the mac mini and imac look to thhe exter harddrive for the iTunes library.  The Apple TV will be on the downstairs tv and will look towards the itunes library for the mac mini.

All of the other laptop will also be on the network.  I was hoping to be able to have them look to the external harddrive for the iTunes library when they were on the netwrok and then look towards their own harddrive when they are not.

Does anyone have suggestiosn so far?

I was told I can make it so my iPad can play movies and shows and also music from my external hardrive.  Not sure how to do this.  Was told I needed a hardrive that was meant to be a server and not a backup.  I was also told there was a way to do the same for the iPhones and was told there was some way of getting to my harddrive if I was on wifi somewhere else, some remote desktop type thing.

Any help or suggetions is appeciated.  IF you think there is a link or another post please let me know.

Thank you for your time in advance.

Please do not waste your time or mine be posting

Ok, i will be honest i'm no expert and this is my first time posting but this is exactley the subject that i know most about, am the most interested in, and am the most curious about.

    I have:

    Mac mini 2011

    Macbook air 2012

    Iphone 4s

    2 atv 2's

    Airport Extreme

    Panasonic 42 Plasma

    Dennon reciever

    Roku xd

    1tb seagate hd

    Paul,

I have a very similar setup as to what you want from what i gather. I used to have my exernal hd connected to my Airport extreme but when i got this new mini last week i attached it to the mini. I am running all my itunes through my TB hd.

If you hook your HD to the mini what I do is goto:

itunes preferances > advanced > click change under Itunes media folder location

This will let you change where Itunes is going to get its content from.

Now to get the itunes content on the network so all your other devices can see it in itunes just turn on home sharing and your library should be seen on all comps and ios devices on the home network.

To get the HD through the finder and add files manually make sure your file sharing is on, on your mac mini.

Goto system preferances > sharing > choose file sharing tab and make sure you ad the hard drive is viewable read and write.

THIS IS ALL FOR IN HOME NETWORKING.

As i said this is my first time posting and i'm sorry if i didn't explain as thoroughly as some others but i tried. I would also like to know how to be able to acess my harddrive from 3g or wifi away from home if someone could answer that would be great.

    hope i helped

Probably the easiest way to do what you want

would be to put the "media drive" on the Mini

and leave it up and running all the time and then

set up iTunes Home Sharing.  Then, all other computers

you can have them copy to them what you always want

on them, especially on the laptop, and have them

open iTunes with Home Sharing on.

This approach will allow you to watch/listen to any of

your content at home and the selective content when not

    at home.

This will however pretty much fix the Mini as the media manager

    for iTunes.

B Free solution works if at home only.  Doesn't solve the laptop

    issues.

If you are not tied to iTunes DRM material (movies, TV shows),

    there is a possible solution.

PLEX media server is supposed to have the capability of

connecting to devices from anywhere.  There is even an

app for iDevices (even the Roku in your case)  that is

supposed to be able to do this.

    Check the details here:

    http://www.plexapp.com/

And to the OP Paul, it could also be your solution as well

if you are not tied to any iTunes DRM material.

    Hey Paul,

        Did you solve this issue

"All of the other laptop will also be on the network.  I was hoping to be able to have them look to the external harddrive for the iTunes library when they were on the netwrok and then look towards their own harddrive when they are not".

I would like to do the same and have a scheme for keeping the "master library" updated with purchases (not only from itunes but amazon as well), metadata changes, etc. made on the "client" devices.

    Thanks

    Keone
