I am certain about one thing that is responsible for this issue and its that any photo that has been edited on iPhone itself, like auto enhanced or red eye correction or any other edit it cannot be saved in windows 7 photo viewer.

    thanks Dale, works perfect!

before i saw your post, i was stripping every photo of it's "orientation" data with a EXIF cleaner and then rotating LOL! thanks for the time saver!

This is for everyone.  I wrote a quick app that resaves the JPG using .NET Framework.  This effectively strips the information off that is causing the issue in batch.  Here is the simple EXE.

    Hope this helps.

I have the same problem but a coworker send tis trhu email today I haven't tryed yet but let's give it a try.

Hope this works for you .

    1. Do your import of the pictures (copy, import, whatever) into your "My Pictures" folder or sub-folder.

    2. Open Windows Explorer (The folder next to the start button)

    3. Under Desktop... Expand the "Libraries" tab (the little triangle next to the folder).

    4. Expand the "Pictures" tab.

    5. Right-click on the "My Pictures" folder and select "Properties" at the very bottom.

    6. Uncheck the "Read-Only" box.  APPLY THIS TO ALL SUBFOLDERS.

    7. Open the pictures.

You may have to do this every time, and by every time, I mean every time you sync your iphone as that seems to be when the folders get the read-only flag flipped.  I'm still uncertain why the import creates read-only folders and files. Here is one more work around but, this one seems lengthy.

STEPS FOR PHOTO ROTATION & EDIT FIX STATED ABOVE: (This worked for me using WIN 7, Outlook 2007, Windows Live Photo Gallery and iPhone 4S with latest software upgrade.) DO NOT ERASE SYNCED PHOTOS FROM YOUR IPHONE 4S UNTIL YOU VIEW THEM ON A PC!

Pick a photo with known orientation problem on your iPhone 4S, do your edit/crop & save from the iPhone, then email it to yourself (from the iPhone) or whoever you want to share it with via email. (You DON'T have to change orientation from the iPhone, it will right itself in the email) Open the emailed photo on your PC, save it to Windows Live Photo Gallery (I save it as an additional copy if though it's been synced with PC just in case) Find and open the now right-side up photo in Windows Live Photo Gallery, right click on the photo, Properties/General/Attributes, uncheck Read-only, click Apply and OK. Close photo and re-open in Windows Live Photo Gallery, your "original" iPhone edits should now be visible in the photo plus you can now make additional edits/crop using Windows Live Photo Gallery.

After importing my photos to my PC (Windows 7) from my iPhone, I'm unable to edit them (for example, rotate, crop). I get the following error "this photo can't be saved because of a problem with the photo's file properties"

I check the properties, but they seem fine - all the right permissions, not read-only etc.

Occasionally, I will be able to edit a photo. Say 1 out of 10 of those imported. I can see no differences between these files.

I've also tried using different photo editors/viewers with no luck.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

I was looking at this thread and read the comment about how the guy uploaded his image to twitter and saved it making the image able to be edited which triggered an easier solution.
The problem is Apple likes to claim things as theirs alot as do many web sites etc but unlike them apple make sure its theres by securing it so the solution is to make it not theirs

I opened the chosen image in Paint, didnt change anything just saved it as jpeg. I then opened it with windows photo editor, did what i wanted to the image and boom it saved

    Hope this helps x

I had the same issue for a long time.  I discovered an easy fix:

    Right-click the photo, click "edit"

Once in the Paint, top left corner click on "rotate"

Once you rotate, save the photo.

    Done!

    1. No, for many pictures you are NOT done because many of the photos are locked and cannot be edited or resaved. Yes, some can and some can't. No real ryme or reason to why

    2. Using JPeg Lossless Rotator as I've suggested several times in this thread is far easier - especially when dealing with muliple photos that need rotating. With that app you select the pictures you want roated, right click, click on Rotate Left (or right) and you are done - and it works with both locked and unlocked iPhone images.

My blog post and demo of JPEG Lossless Rotator is here:

You can just download a program such as fixMeQuick, it's free and deletes all the metadata from any pictures you put through it. I think someone has already mentioned a metadata stripper, unless you need the file details this type of software is a lifesaver. I couldn't rotate/crop/edit certain pictures, so now I load ALL of them straight into such software then save them to the PC. Saves time, effort and a LOT of frustration!

    Hi guys..

    I used JPEG & PNG stripper http://www.steelbytes.com/?mid=30&cmd=download&pid=15

Just drop the pics.. It take 2-3 seconds... n u are ready to go...

    Thanks..

    All,

Thanks for all of the suggestions, i have been keeping up with this thread. I have also found a quick fix for the issue by opening the photos with paint and just saving the unedited photo. Then you are able to rotate/edit it just fine with any other program... Though, if you "fix" one of these photos in that way and then want to sync the "fixed" image back to your phone it showes up rotated incorrectly. Im not sure if any of the other "fixes" do the same thing.

My hope is not for a quick fix, but for apple to actually FIX the problem. But since this thread has been open since last year im guessing that this problem is not at the top of thier list.

It Seems that the problem is with Windows 7. Open the file with Photoshop and you will see the Image with the right rotation. Other solution: WINDOWS 8. I have Windows 8 Release Preview and the photos are showed perfectly... Picasa from Google will also show the Pics with the right rotation. I believe anything but the Windows 7 default Image Viewer will show the photos with the right rotation.

If you read through the entire thread its pretty clear that this is NOT a Windows 7 problem for all the reasons stated, not the least of which, this problem does NOT exist in Windows 7 with all prior versions of the iPhone. My wife and I have used all prior iPhone versions with all Windows versions and this has NEVER happened until the 4S came out. At the moment, I'm usting the 4S and she is still on the 3GS. This ONLY happens with photos/videos from my 4S and not her 3GS.

    SOLUTION

I have the same problem but if you edit the photo a little e.g. cropping on your phone, you are then able to edit that photo on the computer. So far I have only found this way to work, so it is very tedious if you have many photos but at least it allows you to edit. If anyone can find a quicker way I am sure we would all like to know!

I have this exact problem too. Windows 7, and iPhone4S. I cannot believe that a fix hasn't been found yet!

Mine shows ok in the preview, but when I copy the image to a storage device to play on my digital photo frame, I cannot re-orientate the ones taken sideways or upside down, thus when they play on the device they are incorrectly oriented!! ARGH
