Apple makes conversion cables from thunderbolt to firewire. I'm sure that there are USB 3.0-to-Firewire cables as well.

No MacBook has ThunderBolt or USB 3.0. Those are only on MacBook Pros that were made after the MacBooks were discontinued.

Thanks for the reply. So, if MacBooks don't have FireWire, and if the iMovie that came with the machine will accept nothing but FireWire, what's one to do? Is there another application I can use that will download videos off my tape-based camcorder via USB?

While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use iMovie. There's an iMovie Support Community where everybody uses iMovie. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/imovie
