Welp I got my 2nd phone in today. Needlees to say its the same. I have come to the conclustion that something about iOS 5.1 will cause the people with iphones on alltel plans NOT to connect or have a hard time finding a verizon tower. I was on the phone with Teck support and said my device wasn't even on the network. He couldn't understand. Well Becuase the new device came with 5.0.1 I couldn't directly back it up. I had to activate the phone as New, then do a upgrade to 5.1 then do the backup. Well while the phone was activated as 5.0.1 It had the VErizon logo and I had full signal. As soon as I did the 5.1 upgrade the signal dropped 2 bars and the logo was gone. Both retail stores in my area are completely lost.
It is not the iPhone or iOS! It is when the phone goes and activates and updates its PRL. The phone was shipped probably with a Verizon PRL in it which disappeared after awhile. This is a network issue with Verizon. The Alltel PRLs are goofy and Verizon hasn't taken the time update them or update individuals with an Alltel to Verizon PRLs.
I agree that its really Verizon but the phones appeared to be fine on 5.0.1 until the update to 5.1. However I believe whatever change Verizon did just happened to be a few days after the 5.1 release. It is a bit strange that clphipps79 new iPhone was fine on 5.0.1 and the issue occured after he updated to 5.1. Perhaps the carrier update version 12 is the real culprit not the PRL. I believe we had version 11 prior to iOS 5.1. Maybe they will resolve in another update soon, either PRL or carrier whatever is creating this issue.
Its a Verizon issue not Apple. I am guessing you are on an old Alltel plan? Supposidly that is the cause and the only fix is to change to a Verizon plan and get the Verizon PRL pushed down. Verizon now has a pretty attractive plan called Sharing Everything with unlimited talk and text for all phones then share the data amongst all phones. You simply select the amount of data you need. From all I have read and seen the missing carrier will not be resolved as long as you are using the Alltel PRL or the hybrid PRL's. I would look on www.vzw.com and run through the wizard to see if that plan will be a better option for you. Again all this is if you are on an old granfathered Alltel plan. I have the same issue except no issues with signal strength or dropped signals.
*NOTE* If you want to keep your grandfathered plan you may check your PRL and see if its an old Alltel or Hybrid. Once I had VZW send down the hybrid PRL my signal went back to where it was before this issue and the only remaining issue was the carrier just not being displayed. Otherwise I have great signal again! BTW my current PRL is 46024
- 52xxx Prl is for Heritage Verizon rate plans with a VZW sided PRL.
- 65xxx is a Hybrid PRL for VZW rate plans (Alltel sided)
Alltel converts (2xxx = 1X, 3xxxx and 4xxxx = EvDO/3G):
- 20xxx, 30xxx, & 40xxx are ALLTEL sided prls for ALLTEL rate plans
- 26xxx, 36xxx, & 46xxx are VZW sided prls for ALLTEL rate plans
Any fix on this yet? My iphone is still having issues. Dropping signal, out of 3G, etc. Very frustrating!
About two days ago, my messages were taking a while to send so, I put my phone in airplane mode & then I turned it off & when I took airplane mode off my carrier hasn't showed up since then. & if I don't have wifi it'll take a long time for me to revive text messages. & I don't know what to do. . .
