I have couple of .mov format files provided by my client. I am not able to play the file in QuickTime player 10.1 in Max OS X v10.7 Lion. Please give me a good suggestion/solution to solve this issue. I expecting your valuable support/help.

I believe you already posted this question in the LION discussion thread. The answers that the posters gave you are GREAT suggestions and tips.

It's possible that the .mov files you received are corrupted. If you have access to another computer, try to play them on the other computer (just to be sure).

Yes the suggestions were really great but unfortunately though I installed perian it did not work for me also I need to open the .mov files only in QuickTime Player 10.1 rather than using any other media applications in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.

I am very much sure that the files I have received is not corrupted and I could play the files in QuickTime Player 10.0 in Mac OS X 10.6.8. The issues are exists only in QT 10.1 in Mac OS Lion X 10.7 and higher versions.

Please suggest me what would be best to done this.

The following may not be of any help to you, but I'll suggest it anyway...

Try to play those .mov files in QUICKTIME 7.6.6.

If your computer doesn't already have it installed, you can download it by clicking on the following link...

We would try to help you if you could provide accurate information about the problem.

Vague things like "doesn't work" or "doesn't play" give us no clue about what is going on.

What are the files supposed to contain? Maybe you should ask your client and have him verify that information for you.

Then what does exactly happen when you open the files with QT Player? Black screen? Green screen? No audio? Error message?

If you get an error, check here:

If you get no image or sound, or a codec is missing, check this one:

Hi Venkat, did you find a solution?  I just purchased 2 .mov files and I can't open either one.  I have the same exact operating systems as you.

AeroQ, the files downloaded.  But when I click on them to open, a window pops up that says: filename.mov could not be opened.  The movie's file format isn't recognized.  I changed the extension to .avi but that didn't work either.

AeroQ  are you seriously trying to help?? . He was very clear with what he said. THE VIDEO doesnt work in 10.1  and in LION  . They work on lower QT versions and lower OSX versions

THE PROBLEM IS LION IS messed up and the worst OS APPLE has ever made. ---- AND you can not go back to the older OS your trapped ... I am moving out of the MAC world soon  Been there since 1987. But these issues are costing me money and i do not have time to wait for the Apple genius to get the milkoff his face to help me.

Since MOV refers to the file container and not the data wrapped in the container, it would be more helpful if you and the OP for this topic included information regarding the audio and video compression formats you are trying to play or, even better, provide a sample file for examination. To be playback compatible with a particular QT player, the compressed data must be BOTH supported by your system's codec component configuration AND the data must be in a file type for which the particular player is programmed to associate with the required codec(s). For instance, although native support was added to the QT X (v10.1) Player under Lion for "muxed" MPEG-2 video content in TS, MPG or MPEG file containers, it will not play the same data when placed in MOV or VOB file containers. On the other hand, pre-Lion versions of the QT Player supported Motion JPEG video but native support for this particular codec was dropped with the inception of the QT X v10.1 Player. So at this point we can only make guesses as to what may or may not be causing you playback problems with your MOV files on your system and cannot test sample files on other systems with similar OS for other possibilities such as component configuration conflicts.

I wonder if there a abetter communiator othat can elp in these matters.

Try searching. This and similar questions have been asked and answered by dozens, if not by hundreds, of different responders over the last several years and the problems remain basically the same..

    1) Some apps will not accept certain container types,

    2) Some players will not play supported compression formats in unexpected file containers,

    3) Some compression format(s) cannot be played because...

    a) the codec(s) is/are not available for the Mac,

    b) the codec(s) is/are only avaulable for pre-System X operating systems,

    c) the codec(s) is/are only available for post-Power PC models,

    d) the codec(s) is/are disabled by default under Lion and/or Mountain Lion OS, and/or

    e) the codec(s) is/are only installed by "Pro" apps like iMovie, FCE or FCP or must be installed by the user

    4) Some security updates prevent otherwise playable videos from playing for no real apparent reason.

I fixed the issue but without THESE GENIUS attitude issues... ANYONE with issues in tha rea - I have the fix.

It is truly amazining that this individual was able to reduce all of these possible issues down to a single solution without even having to define them. Too bad he did not share his miraculous solution here.

Much easier to work with ppl that are able to communiate on different levels.

Even easier to work with people that are able to understand the communication at all levels.

    Obviolusly this guy can not.

Obviously this guy missed the whole point of the posting. Tell your mechanic that your car doesn't work and it it likely elicit more questions than solutions. Without knowing the file container, player, AND the codecs involved it is normally impossible to say why, as in this case, a MOV file plays in one player and not another or why it plays under one operating system and not another. In short, if insufficient information is provided, then no solutions are likely to be given here.
