Q: Choppy HD video in Quicktime 10.

I have a beautiful brand new 27" iMac running Snow Leopard with 4GB of ram. I take videos with my Canon 5D at Full HD and when I play them in Quicktime they are extremely choppy. I didn't notice this on my old iMac with Leopard and Quicktime 9.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Ever get this resolved? I don't recall it always being like this, my videos used to play just fine. iPhoto and Quicktime blow at playing the 720p video I recorded off me Canon SD780 IS. But VLC plays it just fine.

Try loading the 32bit version of QT10.  It should work fine then!  Also the 32bit version of iTunes if you need to.  This worked for me.

I can really consent on the frustration over "It just works"-marketing.

I just bougt a new Mac Mini 2011 version. It is more powerful in the processor, but many simple things like just the wake-up perform worse than the old machine.

Same counts for Video: Even under Lion Quicktime does not embrace DivX and you have to use a fairly old Perian SW to get it working: Disappointing Apple Brand-Behaviour.

I'm running Leopard 10.5.8 with QT 7.7 on a MBP 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo with 4GB of Ram - haven't upgraded to Lion as I hear some of my software (Logic, etc) won't run on Lion without paying for yet another upgrade.

Just bought a Canon 60D, and tried importing HD video, both 720p and 1080p, which run very choppy!!!

I don't have "automatic graphics switching" in QT 7.7 settings?

I tried disabling "Use high quality video setting when available" to see if that made a difference... but no luck.

Tried using VLC... and downloaded the latest version of Perian, but neither made any difference.

Very surprised that this is even an issue! Has anyone found a solution?

I've been a mac user for life and can't believe this is even a problem! Very disappointed.

I'm having the same choppy playback with SD material in Quicktime 10, but not in VLC. Odd.

"Try loading the 32bit version of QT10.  It should work fine then!  Also the 32bit version of iTunes if you need to.  This worked for me."

Please explain how to do this. Tried in preferences but can't find a path.

Please explain how to do this.

The option to open the file in the 32-but mode is in the app's "Get Info" window. (I.e., highlight the QT X icon and select the "Get Info" File menu option, press Command-I, or right-click the icon to access the same option in the context menu.)

So is there an answer to this problem yet?  I have a similar problem: HD video taken with Canon Powershot Elph 100HS plays choppy with QT10 on Macbook Pro, OSX Lion.  Tried many of the suggestions already mentioned - (1) downloaded VLC, didn'make a bit of difference in choppiness, (2) downloaded QT 7 and may have reduced choppiness a tiny bit, but still very choppy, and really unwatchable.  I am so frustrated by this.  I buy a new camera, have the newest operating system and newest version of QT player.  Why the heck won't HD video play smoothly????  What more can I do?

Apparently not fixed yet. I have a new Macbook pro bought less than a month ago. Tried the automatic switching and 32 bit tricks. No such luck. HD video still is choppy and awful. Pretty dissatisfied and disappointed that this issue goes back years with no resolution.

The 32 bit trick seems to have worked for me. The videos now play smoothly. I even tried to play 3 1080p vids filmed with my iphone 4S and all 3 were perfectly smooth.

    thanks for the help!

Still the same for me - the 32bit option helped a little... but VLC so far seems the better player.  Sometimes the world of Standard Definition was so much better....

I tried VLC with good results to except when I try to share or forward the video it goes back to quicktime choppy. And why does VLC give you three copies of each video but only one plays well?
