iMacs have been around since 1998 with different configurations, capabilities, and maintenance/troubleshooting procedures. We can better help you if you would tell us your iMac variant and the Mac OS version it runs. Knowing the processor type will narrow down the model variant enough to start.
Both are available by doing "About this Mac" from your Apple menu. The resulting window looks like this:

It will Run when the Mac isnt off or in Sleep mode usually when u first turn it on it only goes slow because the computers not that hot and its totally normall for the iMac to get hot at the top u can download a tempreture monitor if u want.
