Q: Cannot restore old Lion backup to a new Mac with TM

Hi,

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I was trying to restore my Lion backup from an older mac (2010 MBP 2.4 C2D) to my new (2012) macbook.  However, after pressing Cmd-R, it prompted me that it cannot restore backup from an older machine.

I tried using Migration Assistant but it didn't help.  My goal is to restore exactly how everything looks onto the new machine including the settings and dock icon size as if I was still on the old mac.  How do I do that?  Is there a secret?

Thank you.

My problem is the setup assistant tells me that I cannot restore backup created from an older/different machine.

The Lion installed in your older Macbook Pro, which was an upgrade version is not the same as the Lion installed in your 2012 Macbook.

The one in your new Macbook was optimized for your model while the one you're installing was the retail version.

Some drivers might not be included which is why you're having issues installing it.

Why not use Migration Assistant to move or copy your files and apps over and not your OS.

I tried what you did on my late 2011 and it didn't work.  Which is why I came to this conclusion.

I didn't have any problems when I used Time Machine in setting up my 2011 Lion model from a 2006 Snow Leopard back-up. It's strange that you're getting this error message. Why can't you use Migration Assistant? Same error message? Again, I've used it from ancient machines to new ones with no problems...

Migration Assistant does not "clone" the new mac.  I did that out of frustration only to realize that it did not copy Quickbooks.  It copied the Quickbooks app but it installed as a "new software" and not the accompanying database file.

Its not strange.  I bought a late 2011 Macbook three months ago and I was able to use Time Machine at the initial setup process without a hitch--and everything was cloned as if I was using my older Mac.  It is strange that I am unable to do the same with this latest Mac.

Migration Assistant did not copy my Quickbooks database and so the software installed as "new".  My entire accounting records is in that database.

I mis-read your question after I made my reply.  couldn't edit it after snce it was too late to do so.

I thought you were trying to replace the lion os you have on your new macbook with the lion you had on your old one.  apologies on my end...

    cheers..
