Q: Home Share disconnects..

Ever since the latest Apple TV software update (Apple TV Software 5.0 (4099)) my home share has been disconnecting in the middle of playing movies, or TV shows.  I have updated my iTunes software, running 10.6.  I'm just irritated, I rent a movie from iTunes and about 15 mins into the movie home share disconnects.  My laptop is not going to sleep, I have my energy settings set so that it never goes to sleep while I'm trying to watch a movie.  Any advice or any word on if Apple intends to fix this problem would be appreciated.  It is also happening to my roommate and her Apple TV.  Thank you.

I can understand your frustration but after being on the phone with Apple for three hours yesterday at different times they are seriously helping to define the problem. I can confirm it is NOT the ATV itself as home sharing on an new iPAD is doing the same, obviously is could be linked to home sharing itself, but I don't see how.

It appears that when I run it from a differnet device, i.e. my Mini MAC server, the problem dissapears! Its using the same version of OS, same iTunes but two things that are differnet 1. I am using a drobo external FW800 DAT on the MAC Mini and on my MAC Book Pro I am using a Promise R6 Thunderbolt drive, which interestingly I have just found out about a firmware upgrade, which I have just applied, and have started the test again. If it is that then I am confused as I have had this for over a year and changed nothing. Additionally everyone who has this problem appears to have differnet hardware.

The only other thing that is differnet is the software I have loaded, so if it does it again Apple are going to start looking at that. The problem I have appears to be the same as everyone else, BUT it could be caused by differnet reasons on differnet machines. Eitherway once we have eliminated every other option and hopefully discovered what is causing the problem I will feed back what we found.

I feel like giving up, but after spending so much time and effort in trying to resolve the issue I have gone past the point of no return.

This morning, no  on my apple tv3, no remote (iPad or iPhone) working. Went to my iMac, clicked on my external drive seagate on which my iTunes library is located in order to get the hard drive out of sleep mode. Shazam !!! Instantly remote is working on bothiphone and iPad....However, I can access my library and play anything on the iMac, but cannot play it on the apple TV. That confirms I might have 2 problems the **** seagate drive going to sleep and preventing remote app to work and...the other problem we are all unable to solve including APPLE as to the disfunctionnal homesharing.

Please apple and everyone else stop talking about routers, channels, wifi or other non firmware related issues. Our networks, are fine, the channels (especially odd channels like 5  or 8) will do nothing but increase interferences. My former apple tv was working perfectly fine as fine as all many other devices I use on my wifi. THIS IS A FIRMWARE PROBLEM AND APPLE MUST SOLVE IT RIGHT AWAY AND STOP IGNORING THIS FORUM. DON'T YOU AGREE?

Well, my Home Sharing problem was solved by unplugging my AirPort Express that was used to extend my Wi-Fi network solely for an Ethernet connection to my BD player.  Since the AE has been unplugged, I no longer have any Home Sharing problems with my ATV2 running ATV 5.0.  I never had any problems with ATV 4.4.4, the problem started only after upgrading to ATV 5.0.  iTunes 10.6.1 held the connection slightly longer, but it would still drop unless I unplugged my AE.  Now that my ATV2 connects to my AirPort Extreme instead of the Express over Wi-Fi, I don't have any issues.  By the way, iPads, iPhones, and iPod Touches do not run the same version of iOS as the AppleTV2 or 3.

Even if it works, it's not a proper solution. I bought the ATV to work wireless... Apple has to fix the problem instead of pushing us into poor homemade repairs. Thanks anyway for posting your experiences, Peter.

This is not a WiFi issue! I have an all wired network and I have the same problems.

I´m not saying that is a WiFi problem, but I can assure that after restoring my Airport Extreme´s the problem is apparently gone. No drops in five days. Maybe is not the Wifi, but the router. In my case is Wifi network and in yours is wired, but we all need a router to create the network. As I have written in another thread, my AE,s were set up with the previous Airport Utility version. After many changes in the configuration and many tests, I gave up and restored both AE,s from scratch. Using the new version of AU was really smooth and made all the configuration of my secondary AE automatically, unlike the previous version, which I had to do it manually. It linked both AE,s smoothly. And now it seems fine.

I'm having the same problem with my Apple TV disconnecting from Home Sharing. It used to disconnect at 5 minute intervals, and after restoring my Apple TV thru iTunes with a micro-USB cable, now it still disconnects but seemingly at random (and it can hold the connection for more than 5 minutes before kicking me back to the main menu).

I just got off the phone with a senior adviser, and I have to say it's disappointing that Apple is blaming this mess on our networks. I was "advised" to connect both my MacBook Pro and Apple TV directly to my router with ethernet cables, not sure what good that will do.

When I told him that there are many post on Apple's own support communities about home sharing issues, he arrogantly said that "anyone can say what they want on there." And that this isn't a widespread problem and one likely to be caused by wireless network congestion. Pretty disappointing response from Apple.

Everything was working perfectly since November 2011  until the new version of ATV.  I help my Dad with his ATV and he has the same thing.  All he has is iTunes on WIN 7 PC, wireless router and ATV.  I have tried everything I read everywhere and nothing has helped.

So it has to be something they changed in the update.  This is so frustrating.  Please don't tell me that Apple will be the next Microsoft!!!!!

I'm a wireless engineer and There are places for wireless and for the wire. I too have had this home share disconnect issue and I have been fed up with it. I have a windows 7 perium system running 10.6.1.7 I have 4 ATV v2 & v3 boxes. All of my boxes are on the wire. Wireless is only for my iphones and my laptops. I have opened my firewall to Apple's network ( and its a large subnet too ) All of my devices have static ip address assignements. DHCP is only for a very few devices on wireless.

I have one dedicated machine for an Itunes Server to share my movies / photos and music. This is a software security issue. The only thing I haven't done yet is to run a wireshark trace on the network to identify where the breakdown has ocurred. I will bet it will either come back to the machine acting as my server with non sleeping drives or a missing communication with apple for validation of the device.

    Hello All,

Well since the last Apple updates (Mac-OS, iPad (5.1.1), ATV (5.0.1 [4224])) - and I think the plural is important here - it worked fine for me.. during the last two weeks my family looked dozends of hours of Videos and TV shows without any problem.

So the last updates solved it all for me...

BUT: I keep the "old" tries to fix the problem also, so I still

    - have fix IP adresses for the ATV

    - have switched off dolby surround

don't know if this is nesseccary but just don't want to put any risk in here ;-))

And as everybody can see on the eviroment list (see below), we have a very complex landscape, most wireless. I'm very sure, that this issue was not a network issue or something else outside the Apple products. The above mentioned updates came out all together. I think they found something and had to fix it it in all devices. Probably not a big thing, but it they had  to fix it ... and luckily they did ;-)

Our family enviroment contains the following Apple products:

    - iTunes on a Win7 32 bit Noname PC (all content)

    - second iTunes on a iMac with OS 10.6.8 (all content)

    - third iTunes on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8 (daughter, only selected content)

    - fourth iTunes on a Win7 32 Samsung Notebook (son, only selected content)

    - all iTunes sharing the same Home Sharing ID

    - 2 Apple TV second generation

    - 1 Apple TV first generation

    - 2 iPod touch (bought last year)

    - 2 iPads (second generation)

The ATV, ipods, iPads and the Notebooks are connected wireless

    - 1 Airport extrem

    - 2 Airport Express (in WiFi repeater mode)

except the old ATV first generation. This device is connected with a pair of Powerline adapters

the IMac, the win7 machine and the printer are connected by a gigabit Ethernet switch - this also connects the Airport Extreme.

OK that all for me... good luck to everybody....

I am experiencing this problem. I have two ATV3's. One on ethernet and the other WiFi via AE "extending wireless". No issues at all on the wired ATV3, but other is dropping home share.

No problems with Netflix, iTunes match, etc. Running two computers with iTunes, win xp and mac. Wireless ATV3 drops from both after a few min.

Does anyone have an update on this problem?

I have also experienced this problem for the past few months, since the last major ATV update. My network has a Time Capsule and an Airport Express to extend the network. I run iTunes on a MacBook Pro 10.7.4(now). All my routers are running the latest updates, ATV has the latest update. I experience the problem when my ATV is connected to the Airport Express(AirPort Utility tells me what is connected to each router). I discovered that if I unplug/turn-off my Airport Express forcing the ATV to reconnect to the Time Capsule - the problem goes away and we can watch the entire movie. I've done this several times now and each time it has solved the problem for watching movies. It seems to me that something gets dropped/lost b/n the ATV and my MacBrook Pro when passing through the AirPort Express(and iCloud?? you know Home Sharing doesn't work if you are not connected to your iCloud account). Netflix and the other ATV seem to work but it could be their performance is affected some but not terminated.

I have the "Home Sharing" issue as well.  My home computer is wired to the time capsule/router and the apple tv2 is wifi.  If I connect from ATV2 to home sharing/computer and it will play my music until the screen on the TV "flips" to the other side as part of the screen saving. It will happen the same way on any album.  Takes about 10 seonds.

I AM SO OVER APPLE NOT TAKING NOTICE OF THESE ISSUES.  I HAVE NOW OWNED MY APPLE TV FOR MANY MONTHS AND EVERY TIME I TURN IT ON IT TELLS ME I NEED TO TURN ON HOME SHARE.  WHEN I GO TO MY COMPUTER IT IS TURNED ON.  WHEN WILL APPLE FIX THIS?  I STUPIDLY BOUGHT THIS BOX FOR SEVERAL PEOPLE THINKING IT WAS A NEW INVENTION!  MANY OTHER COMPANIES OFFER ONES THAT WORK AND DO NOT HAVE THESE HICCUPS.

APPLE NEEDS TO FIX THIS INSTEAD OF EXPECTING COMMUNITIES OF DISGRUNTLED USERS TRYING TO FIND REMEDIES.!  WAKE UP YOUR SERVICE AND PRODUCT IS NOT WORKING!!!!!
