Jul 15, 2012 2:42 PM in response to DCs PC Repairby Camelot,That's kind of a vauge question - or, at least, the direct answer cannot begin to answer your question since there must be more to it.
So, directly - how do you create a DNS record on your Mac Server? Open Server Admin, click DNS, choose a zone, click the Add button and fill in the details.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I suspect there's more. Do you have a domain you're already using? or do you need to create one? Is this purely for private/internal use, or are you looking to create a public domain/record?
What kind of record are you trying to create? A simple Alias record? or a CNAME? or maybe MX records for mail routing, or PTR records for reverse DNS...?

Jul 15, 2012 5:04 PM in response to Camelotby DCs PC Repair,I am brand new to creating my own DNS Server. I wanted to learn how to do it so that I can one day advance to another department where I work. I done general and more detailed searches on the web but those left me confused. I bought a Mac mini server to teach myself but stepped in over my head. The funny thing is even though I have a degree in PC Troubleshooting & Electronics as well as an A+ & Network + certification, I have never learned the opposite side of the DNS server. I work for an ISP and missed a chance to move up because I did not know how to create a DNS Record or maintain a DNS server. Therefore I am trying to make sure that it doesn't happen again.

Jul 15, 2012 5:18 PM in response to DCs PC Repairby DCs PC Repair,On my own system I was trying to setup an Internal Network DNS. This is off topic a little, but I actually want to have a List of IP Addresss to Domain Name translations stored on my Mac. I want to use this information to create my own DNS Server eventually. However, first I just am trying to learn how to create the DNS record. I have a list of some things that are supposed to be in the zone file but not all. I also do not know how to create or write this zone file. I do not know how it is supposed to be formatted etc.
If someone could point me to a couple good links then I would be very grateful.
I do have an issue on my Mac though. While in the Server App, I try to go to the ProfilebManager and Safari can't find my server by its host name. The hostname is server.dcentrpris.private
I can go to Mail and others from with the Server app and they will load in Safari.
I have a registered domain but wanted to learn locally first if possible. Thank You

Jul 15, 2012 11:33 PM in response to DCs PC Repairby Camelot,It sounds like your question is more focussed on learning DNS in general, rather than 'creating a record'.
As it happens, Mac OS X Server uses BIND, the de facto DNS server on UNIX platforms. However, Apple, in their typical style, put a GUI front-end on it. So learning how to use Apple's GUI to manage DNS won't teach you about DNS on any other system.
Similarly, other UNIX platforms typically require you to edit BIND text files manually. If you're using Windows Server then you have a different GUI environment (with no corresponding text file option).
The point is that each of these systems have a different way of 'creating a record'. Learning DNS on Mac OS X Server won't necessarily train you for the big world.
That said, my earlier post pretty much covers what you need to do - create a zone, add records. The trick is knowing which records you need to create.

Jul 16, 2012 1:17 AM in response to Camelotby coocooforcocoapuffs,Camelot, u rock and I enjoy reading your posts. I was wondering this just yesterday: is there a way to create reverse DNS records in the GUI? It seems they are automagically created, but could not figure out how to create one manually....

is there a way to create reverse DNS records in the GUI?
To be honest, I don't use Apple's GUI since I long-ago outgrew what it lets you do. However, from memory, I do recall that it creates reverse zones automatically, based on the domain and forward records you create, but I don't think that precludes you from selecting the reverse zone in Server Admin and adding additional PTR records, just like you add A or CNAME records in the forward files.

Jul 16, 2012 6:56 PM in response to Camelotby coocooforcocoapuffs, thx, yes, the tools gui just has options for creating primary / secondary DNS records, so in my case, the reverese records had disappeared. My fix was clone backup, but if it happens again, it would be nice to know how to recreate those (manually or otherwise).

Jul 16, 2012 11:33 PM in response to Camelotby DCs PC Repair,Thanks for the help. So there is no way to manually create those records though terminal or some text editor then? Of course I have no clue where to store them on the Mac either, lol. I have 3 PCs with Ubuntu, but not the Ubuntu Server. I have never messed with the command shell though. GUIs have spoiled me. You think I could learn to create one on Linux?

Re: Configure DNS - OS X Server Next Steps

You're setting up internal DNS services, you referenced your ISP DNS servers and you should not have, and now those servers have no translations for your hosts. This is a common misconfiguration.
See [configuring DNS on Mac OS X Server|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436] for how to set up your internal DNS server.
And if there are any references to your ISP DNS servers here (within your client settings, within your server settings, your Airport settings, etc), then you're usually going to have DNS and connectivity problems. You're running a server now, so you'll be running your own services, and (particularly because of NAT here) referencing only your own DNS server(s).
You may be setting up external DNS (if and when you need that), but that should happen after you set up your internal DNS. The above article has a link to setting up external DNS, when you get around to that, if/when you need in-bound connections into your LAN.

Mr. Hoffman,
I am trying to install Server admin tools and having issues. I have tred 10.7.4, (.3 & .2). I keep getting a pop up stating: The installer is damaged. the installer can't open the package. There may be a problem with file ownership or permissions. I have set the permissions to allow read & write for everyone and I still get that message. The installer will open other packages with out issue. Info on ServerAdminTools.pkg shows read only. Info on ServerAdminTools10.7 shows read & write. Info on Downloads folder shows read & write. I am logged in as Admin on a Mac mini Lion Server. I have a screenshot that I can send somewhere if needed. Any ideas how to get this installed?
Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.7.1), OSX Lion Server

Have you tried deleting the current download, and re-downloading the Server Tools installer from Apple again?
If this is not related to the OP's posting (and a failed download probably isn't), please start your own thread here; piling onto a thread (with what looks like an unrelated question) tends to get me confused.

Mr Hoffman,
The original poster's questions along with your suggestions make it seem like the same thing that I am trying to do. I am a newbie as well. I have deleted the downloads each time I retried an earlier version. I do have my own post, but did not ask the right questions apparently. I will copy what I was replying to from his post and post it in my OP. Here is link to my OP: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18939433#18939433
Thanks

Hopefully by me moving a copy of the post of yours that I was replying to here along with the responses, it will be less confusing with the other posts in that thread.

Jul 21, 2012 1:56 PM in response to DCs PC Repairby DCs PC Repair,It seems to me that the files successfully downloaded each time. Each .dmg file has no issues extracting to show the Server Admin Tools.pkg file inside. However, when I try to open the file, I get the following message: a pop up stating: The installer is damaged. the installer can't open the package. There may be a problem with file ownership or permissions
