The App Store is accessed through the App Store application or iTunes. There is no browser access.

That's what I thought, however, I do not understand why you can not purchase Apps with a desktop, laptop or notebook?

What kind of Apps are you talking about? Mac OS X apps or IOS apps?

Mac OS X Apps for iMacs, and macbooks can be purchased with the MAC App Store available since OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and Lion.

iPhone, Ipod Touch and iPad apps can be purchased from the App Store on the devices or from iTunes running on iMacs, Macbooks, desktops, laptops or notebooks?

If I am following you correctly, updating from OS X 10.6.6 to 10.6.8, I lost the ability to access the Mac App Store. If I update to Lion, that would restore my access to the Mac App Store thru Safari.

The reason I am trying to resolve this issue is because I do not want to update to Lion; I am happy with Snow Leopard. When I visit a website like macupdate.com or cnet.com, I would like to download an app which is only available thru the Mac App Store consequently negating my ability to download onto my iMac. Sometimes the developer's website offers direct downloads, some not. Currently I can only access the Mac App Store thru iTunes for my IOS devices.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

updating from OS X 10.6.6 to 10.6.8 should not cause a problem with the App Store.

" If I update to Lion, that would restore my access to the Mac App Store thru Safari." No, there is no access to the App Store from Safari.

The App store should be in your Doc or in your Applications folder. It is also in the menu when you select the Apple icon in the top left of the top menu.

If you cannot find or open the App Store. Do you have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or 10.6.8 . Select About This Mac to see. If you have a problem download the 10.6.8 update from apple and install it. (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US)

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico my first language is Spanish. I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.

You appear to be very confused about this entire process.

    1. The Mac App Store (MAS) only provides you with apps that will run on Macs. MAS versions of apps can only be bought from the MAS app on a Mac. MAS versions of apps cannot be bought on the Internet using Safari or any other browser. The MAS is available with OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.6 to 1.6.8 or with any iteration of Lion, and soon Mountain Lion. Only the version of Mac apps bought from the MAS can be updated with the MAS. Apps bought through another distribution stream are not updateable by the MAS. When you visit macupdate.com or cnet.com and download an app, it is not a MAS version and cannot be updated by the MAS.

    2. The iTunes App Store only provides you with apps for iOS devices; iPads, iPhones and iPod Touches. These apps can be bought through the iTunes Store in the iTunes app on a Mac or a PC. Or they can be bought using the Apps Store app on an iOS device. iOS apps cannot be bought from any other source.

OK, I understand the difference with Mac OS X Apps and IOS Apps.

My Main problem is why I can not access the Mac App Store thru the Apple Icon running Mac OS X 10.6.8 on my iMac?

Try downloading and installing the 10.6.8 update combo. It is safe to install over your current installation. It will hopefully fill in any holes on your Mac. Drag & drop the MAS app into the trash before you install the combo.

I tried that yesterday and wound up having to restore my hard drive from my backup.

That doesn't make a lot of sense, as this is a benign troubleshooting measure. There must be something wrong with your kit or with your own user account. Why did you need to do a restoration after installing the combo?

The next step would be to determine if this is an issue in your user account. Create a Test user account and sign in and see if the MAS still is unaccessable.

After reinstalling the combo, the OS X first was extremely slow, then it hung up and would not respond anymore.

That's why I had to do a total restoration (first time and it worked).

I set up a test user account. The App Store was accessible.

Now the question is how do I fix access to the App Store in my main user account?

    Thanks for your help!

An issue like this is almost impossible to track down in youruser account. It is obviously in the backup because it was restored with everything else. You could try erasing the HDD and resting from the backup again, but thins time only restore your personal content, not your settings and such.

If that doesn't solve the issue, then you need a new user account.

When you say a new user account do you mean on my iMac?

How would I move all my stuff from my current user account to a new user account?
