It always crashes when the Mac decides to use the NVidia GPU. For some **** reason, it will try to use the NVidia GPU even though "Automatic graphics switching" is off; for example, when Mission Control is activated.

As long as I don't use Mission Control, the machine is stable. If I try to use gfxCardStatus, it doesn't always catch the calls to use the discrete GPU (e.g. crash right after login, for example).

    But yes; consistent.

Yep... worked for me (I've been following this thread a very long time, waiting for a solution to appear) I "downgraded" to SL a month after suffering hangups 2 of every 3 logon screens...  Before I "upgraded" to Lion I made a clone with SuperDuper, so all I had to do was restore the clone and then recover my documents from backups. I've also restored another laptop (MBP6.2 as mine) by making a clean install using the factory disk and then recovering the system from the Time Machine disk.... selecting the last valid copy BEFORE the Lion install. It's also running with SL and working like charm.

I won't fight any Apple "genius" to change my board in order to solve a problem that's clearly software related. If the NVIDIA has a firmware or hardware issue, all they had to do was keep the old drivers, maybe change what was needed to make it work with Lion, and  that's all.

By the way, I haven't missed ANYTHING from Lion, in fact I think I'm gonna miss things Apple removed from SL to make Lion. People at Apple have to assume it: a laptop IS NOT a tablet, so what's the point on forcing customers to work as it wre one? If I want a tablet I'll buy one...

is your computer a MBP mid-2010?

you mentioned crashes on logon... you had crashes only on logon, or also while doing random tasks on the computer?

i'm not sure it's enterily software-related simply because if it was, the fix would be ridiculously easy. an easy patch to the system. and they would certainly release that fixing patch. as a matter of fact, they have, but we all known that didn't work for everyone.

  • 2,659. Re: Lion randomly crashes - black screen
    sardo007 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Yes, both of then are Mid-2010, MBP6.2, the ones with the GPU issue. In my MBP I had the logon screen hangups, and also the grey translucent multilanguage hard-reset-or-die screen... That last one used to appear when I switched applications that triggered the graphic card swapping.

The fact is I think this is a problem with multiple causes. I've been investigating and even in this thread there have been people explaining that Lion drivers make extensive use of SIMD GPU instructions and other functionalities that are seldom used or even inactive in SL and before. So I think keeping old code in the NVIDIA drivers could have solved the issue... BUT... if the high level interface, or some other code has changed so much so as to make the driver impossible to use without hard reworking I understand they are not willing to rewrite the code just for "a few users".... It's easier for them to replace the logic boards with the ones that are not showing the GPU bug... Then, if you can deny that replacement to as many users as you can, you have both problems solved: the ones that have the new LB are done, and the ones that don't..... just buy a new laptop... It's hard to assume but it's how it looks.

I've preferred the not-so-logic "solution" of keeping SL in my MBP, since I didn't really liked Lion so much, and I've not needed to use any "Lion-only" application yet... I've been sticking with XCode for SL, and I've found workarounds to use the newer SDKs with it, so I don't really need to "upgrade".

I'm still monitoring this thread, because I PAID for Lion, so in case I need it (say, some day I can't use XCode in SL anymore) I want to be able to install Lion and USE it.... the fact is I COULDN'T use it, because I was restarting my computer more than 20 times a day... I've seen better Windows behaviours :-P

Sorry for the length... Hope it helped and good luck.

P.S. I'm not sure my next laptop will be Apple.

It's been 299006 Views and 2,658 Replies in this thread alone, and yet Apple have not done anything to provide a proper solution. The video update worked for a while, then the crashes came back for most people. Extending the warranty is not enough when the service providers use a diagnosis tool that fails to detect the error in some cases.

This is exactly what's the problem, the error isn't always detected. Also the warranty extension is too short, as many of the mid-2010 machines are over two years old now. Something has to be done about this, but what can we do?

The one thing that might help is gather information from users suffering from this problem and get it in the press. What is a good way? Does anyone know how such actions have worked in the past?

I also have a mid-2010 MBP, with the latest cat.

A long while after (couple of months) Lion update, usage of mission control triggered sudden restarts, and I presume everybody has this problem here.

But I don't know whether anybody else noticed, after this faulty restart, my magic mouse also goes to faulty mode, jumping to places making it completely unusable. I think I have checked with other mouses and the problem remains. But there is no problem with the trackpad (yet).

I noticed that sudden restarts are not directly related to mission control, at least in my case, it can even be triggered by magnification of dock, or a quick look at the preview; this bug slowly kills me. After restart spotlight does a full reindexing which makes it a couple of times more annoying. These things happen everytime the restart happens, so it is not a Heisenbug and I wonder what the Mac developers at Apple are doing rather than fixing this bug.

Can anybody else confirm these (new?) symptoms?

By the way, after some graceful restarts mouse magically recovers, but I haven't seen any recovery from the mission control problem; I've disabled the gesture and I'm try not to use quick look. If I could, I would have disabled the Nvidia chip since I can't do anything useful with it!

    Cheers,

    \Can

Maximfromdc: try running motion software if you have any, that will probably give you the answer about if the problem is actually gone or not. Just saying that it works after a replacement doesnt mean it will last long im afraid. Apple' own tool Motion can be used for this, when i use it my mac crashes almost instantly, and this is one of those tools that really is putting the graphic card to the test.

For some weird reason im able to use motion graphics tool like adobe after effects without any problems, but motion crashes just after first playback.

I re-installed mac os x a couple of months ago and downgraded to snow-leopard, or re-installing to factory settings since i used the installation CD, and I still have the problem. I cant really get over that i didnt have this problem the first year i had the mac, and the logic board is replaced two times (one of those appeared to be defect).

Since a lot of macs from the mid 2010 period are working, and a lot are not this might just be a bunch of logic boards produced in this time period where a significant part is faulty and a large part is not. This would reflect the reactions and comments people have. This problem would end up as a problem for the end users, which is us, because we need a valid reason to give apple to replace the logic board every time. So if this is the case, then if you get a board thats not faulty youre in luck. If not, you need to try to convince the "technicians" at the store to replace it again and hope for the best. If you have some identical macs that are working and some other identical macs that are not i cannot see how this can be anything else than that. If you dont have any warrenty this might not be cheap, and you again end up paying for apple' mistakes.

yes, maybe it has multiple causes. that could explain why the TS4088 test detects the problem in some computers, but doesn't in others. which means apple has not fully acknownleged the problem yet.

I should add that every once in a while, after a BSOD, the system freezes at the login screen, and sometimes I get kernel panics. Turning off the Nvidia card is not a solution, as it is in needed to use an external monitor. And, of course, we've all paid great money for it, so disabling it is not that fun.

  • 2,667. Re: Lion randomly crashes - black screen

I was never aware of this problem before until I decide to Google this issue. I have a 2010 MBP 2.66 GHz 8GB Apple RAM and an SSD.

It is currently in the store and they are going to replace my Logic Board though it just passed the 2 year mark since purchase. Will report on how it goes.

The real question is - if it is NVidia drivers that are causing the problem, does anyone know if Mountain Lion, OS X 10.8 will fix this issue? Did anyone manage to run the Mountain Lion GM on your MacBooks to see if the issue still persits. I smell a class action lawsuit if it still does and Apple doesn't acknowledge it and either give the users with a credit towards a new purchase or make it work with Mountain Lion, a free upgrade to the OS of course.

This is unacceptable by any means. Apple, you can do better.

  • 2,668. Re: Lion randomly crashes - black screen

I was just about to post a comment on this.  I "upgraded" to the latest release of Mountain Lion, hoping that this would sort the problem. It did not. I still have the BSOD issue. There does not seem to be any improvement at all.

I am about as angry about this as anyone can be.  It disgusts me that Apple, after having been aware of this issue for so long, have done nothing to help its customers. At least MS issues fixes in an attempt to sort issues. Apple has taken a cowardly and unethical position of ignoring the issue, and the trouble and misery it is causing so many MBP users, althogether. It is insulting and dishonest, in my opinion.
