hello I am using a mac desktop at work and the version is 10.5.8 what do i have to do to upgrade to a higher version. is there an instal or do i have to purchase something.

That depends on exactly which Desktop Mac you have!
Since you are asking here in the PowerPC iMac area, I will tell you that no PowerPC Mac (it doesn't matter if it is an iMac, PowerMac, iBook or PowerBook) can go past MacOS X 10.5.x, aka "Leopard". To go to a later version, like 10.6.x (Snow Leopard) or 10.7.x (Lion), your Mac must have an Intel processor.
Under the Apple Menu (leftmost end of the menu bar at the top of your display), select "About This Mac", which should be the first item on the list. There will be a line that starts with "Processor:". If that line has "PowerPC" on it, that Mac can only go up to 10.5.x. There is no upgrade path for those machines.
If your "Processor:" line has the word "Intel" in it, then you can follow the replies in this thread to go to a higher version of Mac OS.
