Copy from Event 1 and Paste in Event 2 does not work - the Paste button is greyed out. I tried Photos/Duplicate then Cut and Paste the duplicate, labelled version 2 - this worked but brought along with it to Event 2 the original photo and the copy that previously didn't work! However, the original photo is no longer in the 1st Event. Confusing or what? iMac OS X 10.6.8 & iPhoto 11 9.2.3

It does - simply hold down the alt/options key while you drag the image from one event to the other.  But why do you want to do that? What are you trying to achieve? There usuay is  usually no reason at all to waste disk space by having two copies of your image in different events. You can add the image to several albums, slideshows, and books, without having to copy it to a different event.

P.S. I tried this with iPhoto 9.3.1 on MacOS X 10.7.4 - If I remember correctly it also worked with iPhoto 9.2.x, but I cannot try it on my system.

This is curious because I can't do this either.

You don't duplicate files in iPhoto, you duplicate the Photo - and it acquires the 'Version 2' tag. But this duplicate is virtual  - for instance, use the File -> Show in Finder -> Original command on both images. It points to the same Master.

Holding the option (or alt) key makes no difference to how it performs to me.

I quite agree with you that this is not the best use for Events.

Events are organisation for those who can't really be bothered. They are automatic - based entirely on Date and Time the camera records the photos as taken. You can move photos between Events, you can Merge Events, you can Rename them and sort them in various ways except one: You cannot manually sort in an Event as Events are all automated.

Albums are much more flexible, can be sorted in any way you like, shared and so on. But most of all, as they are virtual, a single shot can be in 100's of Albums and use no extra disk space whatever.

TD, what is your iPhoto Version?

As I said, I tested this in iPhoto 9.3.1, and it behaves exactly like in Aperture. Option dragging to another event turns the cursor into a plus sign, and I find a copy of the image in the other event, unless there already is a copy of the image.

For example: Option-Dragging from event 28.12.2010 to event 11.12.2010

    duplicate.png

I think, this is a consequence of the new, unified library.

    added:

After the above option-drag to two projects, I find three copies of the master/original file in the iPhoto Library:

    threemasters.png

So, this really creates new image files, not only duplicate versions.

I'm on 9.3.1 and I don't even have that Events heading in the Left Hand Pane

Do you get the "Events" section, when you open a test iPhoto library at least once in Aperture? I think, that may be the difference. I just created new iPhoto library, and that one does not have the "events" section either, but all my older iPhoto Libraries have this section. So it looks like my iPhoto Test Libraries are now mongrels, after having been opened in Aperture, and no more fit to test iPhoto on them - what a pity.

    Yes that explains it perfectly.

I have opened that Library with Aperture, then quit and opened it again with iPhoto. I now have that Events heading and I can also option-drag to a new Event and get a second master, and so have two separate files in two Events.

So, the answer to the query is you can't do that, unless you first opne the Library with Aperture, or export to the Finder and import as a new copy.

Thank you for trying to solve my query. Like TD I don't have Events listed in the left hand column so I cannot drag from one event to another. Maybe this is because I do not have Aperture but I would like to know if it may be hiding somewhere. However, I can at last copy from one Event to another by the export to Finder import to another Event method. I will also start to use Albums more as you suggest, especially as this seems to be the only way to place photos where you need them.

    Best wishes,

Thank you for your input to solving my query. It seems that you have learned something along the way as well. As you will see from my previous reply to leonieDF I found that it was your final suggestion that provided the solution. This is my first query to the Support Communities so I am pleased it has been successful. Alas, the only thing that wasn't is that I thought I had allocated the credit for solving it to you as I did it after I pressed the Add Reply button to the previous reply not this one, so I have had to use the helped me button instead. I will get better at it.

    Thanks again,

    Best wishes,

    .

I do not think so, unless you bought it from the App Store. Aperture is the professional version of iPhoto, with more advanced editing and organizational options.
