My iTunes icon has gone AWOL from Get Info and the Force Quit, but it shows up find in the dock and the application switcher.

In Get Info, I also can't click where the icon should be (e.g., in order to paste an icon back in there).

Any ideas, folks? Dump finder cache and/or prefs? I've already verified and repaired permissions recently (2 days ago), I've also recently deleted several caches using Onyx, in the process of troubleshooting some pinwheel and freeze problems.

I just ran into this myself while trying to troubleshoot some Steam issues. No solution yet. I have done everything you have done as well.

I have this problem as well.  Icon is missing.  The program seems to work fine, but weird that the icon is gone in those places.  Tried permissions repair, restarting, shut down and restart.

okay, i've faced the same problem as you do and had found out where the problem is.

so, the problem is located inside itune's "contents/resources/itunes.icns"

first of all, i'm running sonw leopard 10.6.8 with a macbook pro.
the problem showed up when my itunes upgraded from 10.6.1 to 10.6.3.

i've tested it by replacing the itunes.icns under 10.6.3 with the one that is under 10.6.1, and the problem was solved. one more thing that i found out during the test is that a new file was created while update, called "iTunes_Leopard.icns".

my guess is that there's a bug with the icon in the update, buy it just my guess.
hope this helps. let me know if it works for you

I had the same problem, iTunes icon not showing in force quit - and maybe other locations I've not checked.

I followed your advice and AFAIK the problem is gone, so a big thank you to you!

Actually the 'hardest' part was finding iTunes 10.6.1 for Mac OS. I finally found it here:

One step further, two steps back

After I repaired iTunes icons another problem surfaced.

System prefs -> security, 'block all incoming connections' off, iTunes added to the list with 'allow incoming connections'. But since I repaired icons, everytime I launched iTunes I would get the same dialog "Do you want iTunes to accept incoming network connections". Answered yes, quit iTunes, relauched, same dialog again.

I followed an advice that said that in the terminal 'codesign -v /Applications/iTunes.app' should be silent or something was wrong. Apparently something was. So I reinstalled iTunes from a Time Machine backup, the icon was gone again but I got rid of the dialog.

It's one way or the other. Or repair the icon and turn off the firewall to not be bothered. But I don't want to sacrifice security for eye candy.

Please Apple fix that icon thing, that shouldn't be so difficult!

Now running iTunes 10.7 and the icon is still missing.

Looks like the latest versions of iTunes is using the retina sized app icon (1024 px). Swapped over the iTunes.icns file from an earlier version of iTunes (512 px) and I now have the app icon back.

I findally got around to trying to fix this. I found Leopard version of the iTunes icon, and did basically what ChinHao suggested:

    0) Quit iTunes

    1) Applications > iTunes > (control-click) Show Package Contents > Contents > Resources

    2) Remove iTunes.icns (put it somewhere else for safe keeping just in case this doesn't work)

    3) Replace with iTunes.icns found elsewhere (the one I found said it was from the Leopard era)

         - This step includes getting past a warning regarding permissions

    4) Close everything up

    5) Force Quit > Relaunch finder

I now have iTunes thumbnails again.

Granted, the icon is now not Retina quality, and the icon I now have is a much smaller file (image below). But it's getting the job done, so I'm fine with it.

As I've seen, this bug occurs after iTunes 10.6.3, including, where also appears a new "iTunes_Leopard.icns" on the iTunes.app/contents/resources folder. Previously, there was only "iTunes.icns" on there.

I suppose that if your system runs Leopard OS, then it uses "iTunes_Leopard.icns" for the app; and if it runs Lion or newer OS, it uses "iTunes.icns". Sadly, Snow Leopard stayed in the middle.

The bug raises on Snow Leopard, where it should use "iTunes_Leopard.icns" that would work properly; but instead, uses the newer version of the icon, "iTunes.icns".

As Apple hasn't fixed this bug, not yet on 10.7, I solved it myself by going to applications folder, then secondary click on iTunes.app, click on "Show Package Contents" and going to Contents/Resources. From there, I copied both "iTunes_leopard.icns" and "iTunes.icns" to a safe place, just in case.

Again, I copied "iTunes_Leopard.icns" to another place, like desktop, and I changed its name to "iTunes.icns".Then I moved it to Resources folder, where I had to autenticate as administrator, and accepted to replace the existing "iTunes.icns"… and Voilá! I hope it works for you too.

Thanks to ChinHao, who gave me some clues for solving this.

Well, I spoke too soon. ChinHao's suggestion solved my problem only temporarily. The icon has gone missing again from all the same places.

I just had this problem with Acorn 3.5 on 10.6.8. In my case I first noticed the missing icon in the Open With contextual menu. I replaced the 1024 Acorn icon in Resources with a 512 from 3.3. Problem solved.
