Have you installed the OS?

Do you have a separate "Install" disca as opposed to the "Applications" disc?

You should be able to use the OS install disk (usually disk 1) to erase the drive and install the OS without the Internet. Once it gets to asking for a name etc shut it down and let the new owner take it from there.

In these circumstances I would try:

1. Erase PRAM
2. Erase and install both disks without an internet connection
3. Connect internet and update only after both disks installed

Could you give more of the steps you followed: you used the Mac OS X disk 1 that came with your iMac to do an erase and install of the operating system?  Does the iMac now startup?  If so, using your connection to the internet go to Software Update and download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Combo installer.  When that installation is complete use your second disk to load the applications that came installed on your iMac.

You are better off updating the Mac OS X 10.6 to the final version before proceeding to further software installs.
