Some times the Apple Server for the Store maybe going through maintenance or updating and can cause an issue connecting.
But, if the servers are not being updated or maintenanced, here's a workaround that works for me.
If I can not connect to the itunes store via Apple Store App I usually go to settings > store > sign in with existing apple id and password.
Then tap on your Apple Store App and you or your son should be connected so you can view purchases and/or update apps...etc.
This normally works for me when I can not connect to itunes within the Apple Store app via home screen.
Try this the next time if you encounter this issue.

@KandyKain : No problem. I'm still having trouble on my phone, my wife's phone and the iPad, and there's more articles beginning to appear online so I guess there's some issue Apple is trying to resolve
