I got a new MBA at the beginning of July.  When it starts up two processes, Bash and Launchd, run and take 20% to 40% CPU each - with the net result that the Mac runs very hot.  They will continue to do this until I force quit them.   Is there some way that I can tell what these processes are and why they are starting up?  I've checked the login startup files and they aren't in there.  I've just installed the update that supposed to stop high CPU usage but it's made no difference - Bash and Launchd ran when I did the restart to install the update.

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

If you’re running OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.

Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:

    ps ax

Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.

If any personal information appears in the output, edit before posting, but don’t remove the context.

Thanks Linc - your help is appreciated.  I restarted the MBA and confirmed that Bash and Launchd were running.  I followed your instructions and I've pasted below.  I've xxx'd out my name in one location.

In the Activity Monitor window, the leftmost column should be headed PID. What are the PID's of the processes using the most CPU cycles? What are the users?

Double-click each of the entries in the process table. What is its parent process?

As with the earlier message I re-started to get this to make sure Bash and Launchd are running  - I usually stop them as soon as they have loaded.

    Thanks again -

PS - just seen how this turns out. I'll try to post a table but I'm not sure how to do it.

Back up all data. Uninstall Parallels according to the developers' instructions. Reboot and see whether there's any improvement.

Thanks for this, but it sounds like I'll have to live with it because I can't work without parallels.

    Thanks for all your help.

I suggest you remove Parallels as a test. You can always put it back. It may need to be updated, or there may be something wrong with its configuration, or it may not be causing the problem at all.

  • 9. Re: MBA Bash and Launchd make it run hot
    4940863492 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Hi Linc.  It's not the removal and re-installation of parallels that concerns me, it's the re-installation of all the Windows apps that I'll need to do if I uninstall parallels.  It'll take ages.  Once I've got through this tranche of work and have a bit of time off I might give it a go.

    Thanks again.

  • 10. Re: MBA Bash and Launchd make it run hot
Linc Davis Level 10 Level 10 (118,120 points)

You don't have to delete the virtual disk file. In any case, you should have backups of your Windows data; otherwise you'll inevitably lose it, whether you uninstall Parallels or not.

  • 11. Re: MBA Bash and Launchd make it run hot
    4940863492 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

OK - I didn't know that I could uninstall Parallels and re-install without having to reinstall all the Windows apps.  I might give it a try next time I'm close to the Parallels install disk.

Regarding backups - I backup all my data using time machine.  I don't back up the Windows apps (I've got CDs of them at home and stashed elsewhere) or anything on the virtual machine because the way the virtual disk works means that every single backup is GBytes of data with the net result that hourly backups were taking at least 4 hours even if I'd not done anything since the last one.

Thanks.  I'll post back after I've tried the Parallels uninstall but it might be a while.
