Since noticing this problem, have you shut down or restarted your computer? If not, I would shut down (power off) the computer. Use this procedure to reset the iPod
Start up computer with iPod NOT connected. Run iTunes. Connect iPod.

Check for updates in iTunes; Most current version is needed; iTunes 10.6.3
