Jul 19, 2012 11:20 AM in response to ugino_mtzby spr1,Folks... The server name has nothing to do with this issue as far as we understand it. m.outlook.com is simply the starting point in the sever detection and autodiscover process and you will ultimately be assigned a server name such as amsprd5151.outlook.com or something else depending on your location. You can also see the server settings you use in the Office365 mobile device settings when you connect online via your web browser at https://portal.microsoftonline.com. Its all in the documentation and is fairly straight forward.
The problem at hand, and which still remains, is the contact app on the IOS device crashing - from using the search function, or during contact editing, or perhaps other ways too. After that point - the exchange protocol and activesync components on the device somehow get messed up and it immediately begins downloading redundant copies of contacts. For us, and our users, it is fairly easy to recreate - and the only 'fix' is to temporarily disable contact syncing on the device (also deleting all contacts on the device) and then re-enabling sync which downloads a clean copy.

Jul 19, 2012 12:16 PM in response to spr1by CyberGuyPR,Concur with SPR1 on the root of the issue being the Contacts app on IOS. My particular case doesn't involve Office 365, just one CEO, Exchange 2007 and two IOS devices from h e l l. Our routine right now involves stopping Active Sync for the user, exporting his contacts to CSV, deleting Contacts in Outlook, and importing from that CSV with "do not import duplicates" option. I lost track of how many man hours we have spent on this. Absurd.

Jul 20, 2012 8:55 AM in response to Vasiliy Ovchinnikovby RST767,Here is what my IT guy did for me and it's working...no duplication on my iPad or iPhone.
I no longer use the Oulook contacts. All new contacts entries are made on the iCloud contacts in outlook and on my Apple mobile devices.
Hope this helps.
- Install iCloud Control Panel on the computer that is setup with your Office 365 via outlook
- Log into iCloud control panel with “Apple ID” and configure the panel to sync with outlook contacts
- Log into outlook, click on contacts and you’ll notice an iClould contacts folder.
- Highlight all outlook contacts entries, right click, drag and drop onto iCloud contacts. You’ll have the following options “Copy” or “Move”. He chose copy incase it failed.
- Once all contacts are copied to iCloud, delete all exchange accounts on Apple mobile devices and re-add them, but make sure you turn off “contacts sync” on the mobile devices.
- On the Apple mobile devices turn on iCloud and configure it to sync with Contacts.

Jul 20, 2012 11:57 AM in response to RST767by S12Barcelona,That is a work around. However, if you fully rely on exchange contacts for all your corporate needs it does not solve the problem given that I still have to leave my exchange contacts synch on.

Jul 20, 2012 2:24 PM in response to ugino_mtzby yaktech,I, too, have been experiencing this issue with several users (of course the sr. execs of my org) with O365. I have been following this issue since late last year, and am extremely unimpressed with Apple's inability to correct the issue.
I know there are workarounds, but come on. Contacts are one of the most common functions of even using any mobile device, and I don't want to have to enable an iCloud account to workaround something that should be pretty close to the top of the "just plain works" list.
Come on Apple. How can I recommend your products and tout they are business productivity capable in my organization if you can't even get something as simple as contact sync with exchange right?

Jul 20, 2012 2:29 PM in response to yaktechby clivebaxter,I have spoken to senior technology reps at Apple, they are aware of the situation.
Mountain Lion may be a fix. But, I think Apple is chosing to go their way here by not allowing sync between their server and Microsofts.
-
Jul 20, 2012 2:47 PM in response to clivebaxterby yaktech,Thanks clivebaxter for your work towards a solution. I have seen your efforts.
I agree with you. Seems these 2 kids just can't get along on the playground so no one gets recess? Unbelieveable.
Does apple have a cloud based messaging platform for enterprise I am not aware of? How can they expect to stay relevant? iPhone is a great tool but we are being a little too greedy here I think. I mean we were finally making some progress with Office for Mac.
I could go on and on but I know it would be an exercise in futility. I'm not asking to run IE on iPhone here. I just want contact sync to work from exchange as it had been for years.
One thing is for certain, until simple things like this get resolved, I will be recommending android devices for personal use and budgeting for them for use in my organization.
-
Jul 20, 2012 2:56 PM in response to yaktechby clivebaxter,When you say "Cloud Based messaging platform" Apple currrently does not support domain named mail servers. Google and Microsoft do. I love my MacBook Air, iPad and iPhone.
I am waiting till the fall to make major purchasing/migration decisions. By then Mountain Lion will be out, Windows 8 and Windows Phones will be available. I personally think Microsoft holds patents that no one else has in this area of cloud server technology. I would like to explore Android as well.

Jul 20, 2012 3:18 PM in response to clivebaxterby yaktech,Yes I was just taking a cheap shot at apple. You said you believe they are just choosing to not sync to exchange correctly, I was making the comment to point out that if not exchange, then what will they sync to in order to be relevant in the business world? They don't have anything comparable to Exchange.
I am hoping for the best with Win8, but often times MS's marketing engine is similar to apple's. All bark and no bite. I'm trying not to be cynical but it is difficult when you've seen the same thing happen over and over and over again. I'm forced to try to make iStuffs work with Microsoft and because of stuff like this I'm stuck in the weeds when I could be making major contributions to our organization through seamlessly integrating technology.
Makes me think improvements in technology are and always will be just a way to make a buck, with making everyone's life easier as a distant afterthought.
One can dream, I suppose...

Jul 23, 2012 3:09 PM in response to ugino_mtzby HELLABELLA,I too am having this issue. I have iphone 4s and Ipad3 synching with my office PC (Outlook) and periodically my contacts begin to replicate. (At one point my 1800 contacts had replicated to 185,000!) If I delete and reinstall from apple devices it seems to be a temp fix but then replication begins a few days later with no rhyme or reason. Extremely frustratiing for me and my IT dept who can't seem to figure this out. Come on Apple!

Jul 27, 2012 5:48 PM in response to ugino_mtzby JimmyTheMan,We have the same problem on my Iphone 4S. My CEO's Iphone has 3200 contact jumped to 155,000 contact in one day and the number increase like virus. I have to run cleanup tools to remove all the duplication contacts. too many times to remember. Apple please fix the bug. Contact function is very important for Exchange user + Iphone.

Jul 27, 2012 11:38 PM in response to ugino_mtzby Evasion3,Hello,
For everybody : informs users that modification of contacts in iPad or iPhone can not be done.
Many time, the duplication seems to be generated by this modification. It seems that the devices are not able or permitted to write onto O365 server contact list. That is why in server there is not any duplication.
The worst is that the modification of call number of a major client is lost!!!
I think I will change of type of device.
Be careful Apple, You could loose many users...
