Ok everyone. I figured it out. Weird bug I think. Anyways when you get the MACBOOK PRO RETINA, all the apps that install and come with it come installed with open with low resolution in the get info section under applications. So when you go to applications folder right click the application and click get info there is a section called open with low resolution. I had unchecked this because naturally you want to have the best resolution possible for you apps. However, this is what caused the problem. See the screen shot. Now the only downside is the text, font etc are not 100% retina quality like the rest of the macbook. But it works now, im sure they will fix it.

if someone is browsing this subject:
- right-click on iBooks Author
- select "Open in Low Resolution" option
- relaunch iBooks Author
This shoud fix issue with content layout preview
