Hmm, hadn't seen that the Lion thumbdrive option was still available, but I REALLY don't think I'm going to spend that much money for the upgrade on an old machine Let's hope that it does portend a return of a download option.

So for some edification, OS Upgrades used to be $119. If you started with OSX 10.0, then 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4...etc... you paid $119 for EACH upgrade.

Apple charging $29 or $19 for an upgrade is not bad at all. Considering inflation, we are all getting a great deal for these upgrades.

I gues I feel this post is kind of like "Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy" where Arthur Dent is upset because he didn't know his house was planned for demolition. I mean... it's not like the plans where buried inside a County Office storage space or something.

Apple has been giving fair warning that the new OS was coming out, but it remains the buyer's responsibility to research and prepare for those changes. I worked at an Apple store and when new computers, OS's, iPods...etal came out, all the "obselete" stuff was returned to headquarters. With the App Store, things have changed and I do not know how that will all work.

I am fairly sure that Apple will remedy this somehow. How and when is anyones guess, but an ounce of prevention... goes a long way.

If Lion has been pulled from the App Store, and I don't know whether it has or not, then you can't buy it at all, except maybe on a USB stick, if that's still available.

I wonder if it may have been a situation of, anticipating high server loads with people downloading ML, they pulled the download of Lion for now.  Maybe it will come back in a short while once the initial ML download fever abates.  They never stopped selling 10.6 when Lion came out and still sell it now.  And retaining a download file on a server costs them pittance.

Just have to wait to see.

Those of us who work in corporate IT are a bit shocked that a still fully-supported OS with an extensive list of serial-enforced hardware deprecation has been so senselessly removed. Both 10.6 and 10.7 physical media are still for sale, ergo, QED, those versions are not EOL'd. Removing the App Store download is just a ham-fisted annoyance, which in this case, doubled the upgrade price overnight, and tripled it over the current version. That's crazy and frankly enough consider parting ways.

The fact that 10.8 requirements are apparently owing entirely to video hardware makes this seem a tad absurd. Other features are routinely disabled piecemeal based on various SKUs, why not something as easily dialed-down as the shiny? For such a vertical ecosystem, this does seem an extremely picayune concern to block an upgrade entirely.

I was waiting for one more Lion update before I wasted my time installing and never would dream that Lion would go without so much as a wisper that it was totally discontinued.

I thought maybe it was a fluke like someone's error. After all there are Macs with years of use but not eligible for Mountain Lion. It isn't like 10.6 was pulled from the shelf when Lion came out - though Lion req'd folks have 10.6.8.

And no not everyone jumps on the latest and those here that read every bit of news and non-news.

My brother isn't ready to buy a new Mac today but was still using pre-Snow Leopard and his system isn't eligible for 10.8, retired and has not had the time nor the need for a new system and/or new OS.

Yet here we are, with even the thumb drive is gone. Even the link, takes me to Moutain Lion instead.

As others have stated, Lion is no longer available for purchase on the Apple online store or App store. My wife desperately needed a copy, and we tried calling a sales rep at the Apple online store. They are out of stock of the version on thumb drives.

However, my wife found success by calling one of the four Apple retail stores that are close to where we live in Orange County, California (lucky us), and was able to purchase a copy of Lion on a USB thumb drive. If you need Lion, I urge you to call your nearest Apple retail store(s) ASAP, as I am sure they will sell out their remaining copies of Lion very quickly.

    I hope this helps.

PS I sent a tweet to Phil Schiller's Twitter account to beg that they reconsider and make Lion available again for users of older Macs that can't run Mountain Lion, or people whose software or firmware for printers or RIPS have not been updated to run on Mountain Lion. (You're welcome, America!)

    Best of luck!

I just called Apple (800-692-7753) and bought Lion.  They take the order and send you an email with code to download Lion.  They opened it back up last night at midnight est.

FWIW, I had occasion to call Apple Support today on an App Store question which got elevated to second level support. While I had a receptive ear, I raised the issue of making Lion available again for those who couldn't install ML and there seems to be a push among at least some staff within Apple to do just that. It sounded as if enough users were (politely) vocal about it, there could be a policy change once the dust settles with Mountain Lion.

Call the online sales folks, they can sell you Snow Leopard or Lion. (no, they are not in the store nor Mac App store). It can be sold over the phone to you.

Nope. Someone probably reported your post as violating the forum terms of service. Not everyone can report problem posts. You have to have been around for awhile and have reached certain point level. After reading the complaint about your post the moderators decided it was legitimate and removed it. You should also get an email explaining why it was removed.

And after reading your posting history I can see exactly why your posts are being deleted

There is apparently a telephone sales system at the Mac App Store, which will allow you to purchase Lion. It has been commented on in the Mountain Lion forum, but I haven't seen any concrete proof. I can't find a number to give you, but if you contact Mac App Store via their link, they can probably inform you how to purchase lion through the telesales system.
