In the previous version of Safari (5), under OS X Lion, the "Top Sites" thumbnails would be flagged with a checkmark when those pages had been updated. In Version 6, under OS X Mountain Lion, none of the "Top Sites" are being flagged when the pages have been updated. I don't see an option under Safari preferences to enable/disable the "Updated" indicator. Any suggestions for restoring this feature are greatly appreciated.

And, yes, I deleted the Safari plist file from ~/Library/Safari, and it did not make any difference.

Noticed the same thing here.  I hope that wasn't another feature Apple removed.  I'm already annoyed that RSS support is gone.  I seem to be loosing features in this release that were really useful in Lion.  My guess is that all these automatically updating features were performance drags and they've been axed to improve overall performance but that's just a guess.

UPDATE:  I just noticed that the thumbnails are updating so there must be a bug that's causing the "star" flag not to show.  I find it hard to believe that if they're updating the thumbnails, they wouldn't show the flag too.

    Go  to   ~/Library/Safari

Move the TopSites.plist file from the Safari folder to the Trash.

Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

Thanks. Apparently my post wasn't clear enough. When I wrote that I had already deleted the Safari plist file, I meant the TopSites.plist file. Deleting that and re-launching Safari did not fix anything. It only forced me to re-create my Top Sites.

That's ok...   try deleting the cache associated with Safari.

    Go to   ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db

Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.

Quit then relaunch Safari to test.

    Carolyn,

It would be helpful in your replies to know if you're experiencing this problem and have fixed it or are just throwing out suggestions.  I'd be most curious to know if Top Sites is flagging updates correctly for anyone in Mountain Lion.  That way, we have a basis to know if it's more likely a bug (requiring an Apple fix) or a corruption issue (user file delete and recreate).  So my question to you would be, is the flag working on your computer running Mountain Lion?

can anyone confirm that Apple hasn't removed the blue star indicator on Safari 6??

I can also confirm that the updated flag is not appearing for me on Mountain Lion.  Not working on any of the 3 machines I have ML installed on, including one that's been running the GM version since it was released (which means it's not a slow updating issue).

If you dig into the Ressource folder in Safari's 6 Contents folder, you will find a .png named TopSitesUpdatedPageCurl, which is that familiar Update Star with its blue background.

Since this png is still to be found in Safari 6's innards, I venture to say that the Update Stars not showing in the Top Sites page is due to a bug, rather than a decision of Apple's to nuke this feature.

    But who knows ?!

Unfortunatly the Safari 6 resource folder also contains the RSS ong file, which as we know, Apple has removed from Safari, so who knows that they didn't remove the blue star banner

    You've got a point there, Odedh82 !

Looking into Time Machine, the TopSite.plist key for "last updated" for each site seems to have evaprorated about the time I updated to Mountain Lion. And the stars aren't displaying on any of my three machines. So intentionally or unintentionally, this seems to be systematic. I'm guessing in a week or two there will be articles - in those very same sites! - about the secret switch to set in Terminal to get the functionality back. Or whatever. Though I hope someone comes up with an explaination sooner...

I might add that I've had quite a few Safari crashes when an item is jumped over into Reading List. I'm surprised 6 isn't just a touch more polished.
