Since iDisk is now dead there is no need to keep the app.
iCloud does not have an arbitrary file storage feature like MobileMe's iDisk, so you cannot move files from iDisk to iCloud.
If you moved your MobileMe accont to iCloud, everything that can be moved will have been moved (contacts, calendars, bookmarks, email etc).

I just looked for some photos in my iDisk on my phone. This is apparently impossible. Did I lose my photos? are they still on my computer somewhere?

iDisk (part of MobileMe) was shut down last July after 14 months of repeated warnings from Apple.
If you did not download the data from your iDisk as instructed by Apple, or did not keep separate backups, then it is long gone. There is no way to recover any data from iDisk now.
Nobody here knows whether you stored the photos on your computer somewhere.
