Q: Dictation not working on Mountain Lion?

I enabled dictation on my mac through the System Preferences. First I tried going to notes and pressed the fn key twice, the Siri like mic appeared and I began to say simple words such us "hello" "how are you" and pressed done. The thre dots appeared for a few seconds then the 'three dots' went left to right and nothing appeared. I've tried this on notes, microsoft word, and also while typing this discussion. Any ideas?

My Macbook Pro not working either. I hear the two dings and nothing happens.   Reset and selected internal microphone, same thing.  Apple has issues and likes to use us as beta testers I guess.  I feel like a Microsoft user again.    Just have to wait until thousand of others compain about it before the fix it. They don't resond, its normal, they just wait for big blogs to start publically complaining.

thank you, did you suggested (selecting "Internal microphone" instead of the default "Automatic") and works fine now.

    IS it working in Messages?

I haven't tried it in other programs, but it's working pretty good in Messages...

Got it working.  Had to turn off and on again and change settings a few times before it worked.  Looks like it may not update settings even if they show correct until you change them and then back to what it should be again. Try that.

Dictation isn't working here too, but a few hours ago it was fine. And when I open the Dictation & Speech System Preferences panel it crashes.

Yesterday, right after installing 10.8 and all relevent updates I tried Dictation and had the same exact problem as you described. But I found that  System Preferences/Sound/Input there was no option for Internal Microphone. The only way I could recover the option was to do a ShutDown and then restart. Once the Internal Microphone option returned, Dictation worked fine.

Today (the very next day) I went to demonstrate the feature and it would not work. Checked the Input and, sure enough, the Internal Microphone is no longer listed as an option.

I am running on an 2.8 GHz iMac, i7 with 8GB RAM.

Update: I called Apple's Support and they did not fix my issue. I took a few hours today and solved my issue. My problem was with Parental Controls. What I was seeing: I posted a screen grab of the Dictation & Speech preferences. There was not way for me to turn ON Dictation. It even stumped the Experts. To make my MacBook run Dictation, I noticed that my User account had Admin, Managed under my name. So, I created a user account, allowed admin rights, restarted, logged in, and noticed that I could finally turn on Dictation.

I learned-- if the user account is "Managed", the Dictation feature will not work.

My User account is Admin only, and the Managed is under the Guest account which is disabled as I am the only user of my MBP. Still doesn't work, sigh. But thank you so much for the update!

Mine wasn't working either, I tried everything that people suggested and nothing worked. But I shut down my computer and while starting it back up I held down Command + Option + P + R ( P-RAM reset ) and now it's working perfectly.
Because other people have said that it randomly started working for them I can't be sure if this was what fixed the issue. I'd suggest giving it a try just incase.

Ok forget it, it worked once and now it's stopped again. -_-
Starting to think my computer just hates me...
