    HI,

It will say Jabber as the System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars pane will have identified something that it thinks is a Jabber ID.

This could be a Google Mail ID (You have to enable Talk on your Google settings) which is run on a Jabber server and will work in iChat

A Double check will be to look in Messages menu > Preferences > Accounts which will also have a list.

(you can set up ID and Accounts in either place)

    So...

If you started with New Message (the box and pencil type icon top left) and then the Blue + icon that appears top right and chose Contacts and a Buddy that uses a Gmail ID and you happen to have a Gmail ID as well then Message may presume you are "talking" to a Buddy rather than a Contact and state the messages will be a Jabber one.

As I have more than one Jabber capable ID it also tell me which I would "Call" this Buddy from.

    Jabber

I have the same thing, here are pictures

I try to write a message with an account I have previously enabled and I get this: Screen Shot 2012-07-27 at 10.35.19 AM.png

So I go to preferences and I get this: Screen Shot 2012-07-27 at 10.36.00 AM.png

That iMessage (unknown) was not there previously, but now it created it and switched to it. Thanks for all of your help.

    Hi,

I am picking up  this tread again after sleeping and watching some Olympics today and having a meal with my family (explaining the time delay)

This is now the third person, with pics that show they have managed to create an second iMessage "Account".

    (Two are in this thread)

I am not sure how people are doing this  (info about your steps would be useful)

Can the "Matt....." account be Enabled ?

I had the beta iMessage app loaded when I was running Lion.  Only ever created one iMessage account and worked great.  Then I upgraded to Mountain Lion, and now I have two iMessage accounts that cannot be deleted.  I never deleted the beta iMessage app before upgrading to Mountain Lion, but it must have kept my "first iMessage" account, and then added a second during the upgrade.

    HI

In this post I describe the steps I take to change the Apple ID.

Does the start of that thread seem like anything you did.

Based on how you could get iChat to a state where it thought it was being run for the first time I have suggested two options on how to do this later in the post.

I update from Lion with Messages Beta to Mountain Lion without removing the Beta and having no issues in the  Full version and cannot replicate this doubling (or more) of iMessages "Accounts" sowing up.

    thanks

Tell your friend to add you Apple Id to you Contact Card, then delete the two messages they have for you now. You should do the same for them if they have their apple id email address tied to messages.

Once you do that, both messages from apple id and phone number will appear in one thread.

Further more, if you add in your friend's AIM or Jabber information to the contact card you have for them, then you when you're using Messages on OSX, those conversations will appear in one thread as well. A well organized Contacts Card is the key to having synced (one chat per person) in Messages.

I am having the issue with two iMessage accounts listed also.

At first I couldn't log in with either -- I'd get the activity spinner for 30 seconds and then it would tell me to check my network connection.

I deleted my imagent plist file and then was able to log in successfully with one of them.

However, the other one is still there. Seems benign and everything appears to work OK, but I do get this error in the console on every messages launch:

7/31/12 9:33:24.148 AM Messages[378]: [Warning] Found more than one iMessage account. Deleting excess: IMAccount: 0xDA0CCF60 [ID: 2B03846B-7D73-464F-AF4B-3D39B86E63CB Service: IMService[iMessage] Login: P: Active: NO LoginStatus: Offline]

    Nothing gets removed, however.

I called AppleCare but they have no clue. They wanted me to reinstall Mountain Lion. Ha!

I would like to know how to get rid of the extra account. Can't figure out what plist file is holding a reference to it.

I did have the Messages beta installed. Probably should have removed that before upgrading.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,

Can you navigate to the Home Folder/Library/Preferences and highlight the com.apple.imservice.iMessage.plist item.

You should then be able to "Quick Look" at it.

Finder > File Menu > Quick Look (CMD + y keys together )  (you can also set the Finder Window's Tool Bar to show the iCon for Quick Look)

This .plist will hold the names (It should only be one) that you have in both the hexadecimal format and the plain text name.

(the pic and the Skitch word are links to a full sized pic)

If you have two names in this .plist and have nothing that will edit this File (Property List Editor or X Code) then delete the file and Restart Messages.

    Hi,

What type of Apple ID is it ?

External from Apple email such as a hotmail account ?

An Older @mac.com name fromthe .mac days

A MobileMe @me.com name ?  (This may no longer work as MobileMe has been shut down)

An iCloud issued @me.com name ?

If it was this type how was it created ?

    An MobileMe conversion ?

Linking to an External email that is an Apple ID ?

An Older @mac.com name conversion ?

There are even some Apple IDs that were created without emails and are essentially Usernames but I doubt you have one of these.
