I can not get messages to work and do not want to get an AOhell account. Do I need one? Please be patient with me this is my first Mac and I have only had it for a couple of months. Thanks again.

Just configure it for your iCloud id.  It only works with your registered email addresses (starting with your iCloud id).  Some time later this year, they'll allow you to link your phone number to it, but that is not yet in place.

You should be able to send to any iOS device (iPhone/iPod/iPad) that is configured with iMessage.  Have you tried to send to your iPhone or a friends iPhone?

you may be surprised that you already have an aol account!

Since Messages is just a dense app with such robust workings, I'll only focus on iMessages and AIM with this but I've spatted off about the different facets of Messages throughout this board.

What I assume you are questioning is how to use messages.

if you setup your iCloud @me.com account and you are logged into iCloud, you should automatically be signed into one of the many accounts that you could possibly log into in Messages.

So in other words, you should be able to use messages off the bat, without any further setup them creating an icloud account.

iMessages acts like SMS text messaging more then a real Instant messaging client. You should not think about using iMessages like you would a normal Chat client.

Moving on, to use Messages other features (note there is no "i" in front of it ) you need to log into AIM, Jabber, Gtalk, Yahoo or Bonjour.

Since you should already have an @me.com email account setup with iCloud, you can use this account to talk with people in Messages through AIM's chat servers. In a way, this isn't an AoL account, because it isn't recognized as one anywhere else but Messages (iChat), it just happens to use those Servers but once you use your me.com username, it no longer really is an AIM account so much as just your apple chat account (this was done before iMessages was created. iMessages should be considered Apple's chat account now, but the old way is still viable and will unlock the features like voice, video, and screen sharing in Messages).

To sign into AIM with your apple id, go to Messages>Preferences>Accounts and hit the plus sign in the sidebar. Now select AIM but sign in like you would this forum or the app store, with your me.com account and apple id password.

if you did it correctly you should see a buddy list appear (if not hit CMD+1 to make it show) and you can begin adding friends who are also signed into AIM the same way you are.

Open Messages .. go into preferences ... accounts .. iMessage.  make sure your iCloud id is config'd and verified.  I've had some issues with some former MobileMe members whose prirmary email addresses were never verified and messages wouldn't use them
