My MacBook crashes continuously for about a month now (started while using OS X Lion). My thought was to wait for Mountain Lion, make a clean install (formatting HDD) and then this should be resolved. Well, it didn't work. Still crashing while using more than 3-4 apps at the same time. All updates installed.

I really hope that someone is able to help me here. I already tried to run the Apple Hardware Test, but it's not available on my machine...

My guess it's that this might be a hardware problem, as it happened with Lion before.

This is the error report from the last crash (20 minutes ago):

It seems that you may suffer from a well known problem from Apple: TS4088.

    Your options:

    - Get a Genius appointment ASAP and tell them about TS4088 - Insist! Because they will say it could be a problem caused by a non Apple "something".

    - They will ask you, have you installed this already: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1469

    - They have a special test to diagnose that issue which last about 30 min.

    - Be ready to hear that the test did not reveal the problem - in fact, it seems that sometimes the test is negative even if the problem is there.

    - Be prepared to hear them saying you have to buy a new logic board which costs £500 +

    - If you are not willing to pay, they say your only choice is to wait for a software update from Apple to solve the problem.

Personally, I started to have this problem just like you after upgrading to Lion. I now have a fresh install of Mountain Lion on a brand new SSD and I just had the black screen of death 5 min ago.

    Good luck

Resetting the ram's seems to alleviate the problem. Installing gfxcardselector also helps a lot.

Anything that will stress the nvidia gpu will trigger the crash.

    Hopefully your problem is solved.

gfxCardStatus will definitely help but I am afraid it will not solve your problem unless you are happy to work with the Intel GPU.

You should definitely get a Genius Bar appointment and ask them to run a video test (issue TS4088).

I assume your Macbook is not under warranty unless you have Apple Care but the "replacement program" will be free if your computer is positive at the test they have for that specific problem.

gfxCardStatus is the only software solution, I personally think this is not a long term viable solution because you always have to check that you are working on the integrated GPU, sometimes you reboot and you are back to dynamic and then prone to crashes.

    Thanks for all the answers!

I've contacted Apple and just returned the computer to an Apple care center that will replace the graphics card

What I dont understand is, if they replace it with the same modell, why shouldnt the problem still exist?

You just did the right thing.

To reply to your question, only a fraction of Macs manufactured between April 2010 and February 2011 were affected by this problem, basically, some of them received a faulty logic board and the first Lion update revealed the problem.

As I write, I just collected my Macbook from Apple Store after they finally replaced my logic board. I have been working all day long on my external monitor without a glitch.

As I am generally satisfied with the Apple Store service (it took 24 hours for the repair), I had to waste my time in two different Apple Store. I am still ****** off at that guy in the other Apple Store with his iAttitude telling me the problem was something I may have installed.

So the moral of the story, insist and insit on the TS4088 if you seem to have all the symptoms!

    What I experience is:

My Macbook crashes if I use Chrome, Quicktime.. all the time!! they make force restart. Firefox works 'longer'

But when I plug second screen (monitor) Macbook works just fine. for hours and hours. I browse, play games... This is strange!

Resetting PRAM and NVRAM, uninstalling Flash player didn't help.

Hopefully update will be soon, otherwise I'll have to downgrade to Snow Leopard as I did with Lion.. that helped a lot.. I almost had no Crash..

If it helps http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US has just recently updated on 31st of July 2012.

It also stated that "Apple will service affected 15-inch MacBook Pro computers free of charge until three years from date of purchase. Apple will provide further extensions to this program as needed. This worldwide Apple program does not extend the standard warranty coverage of the affected MacBook Pro."

Before this update it was two years from date of purchase..

I have made an appointment at the Genius Bar for this coming Tuesday. I will let you guys know if they have resolved the problem and let me replace my Logic Board for free.

The date of purchase for my Macbook Pro 15" (mid 2010) was on March 31st 2010. So if this is the case everything should go as I planned.
