How to open the Katakana input table without selecting Katakana language

On older OSX-es, you could have your language menu on NL or US, and in the menu there was an option to show the Katakana table to input Japanese characters. With the newer OS-es (10.6 and later I guess), this no longer works.

Now you have to switch input to Katakana, and THEN you can open the Katakana input table. Very annoying, as you cannot type normal any longer. All text input is converted to Japanese. You also need to switch back and forth between input languages all the time.

 

Is there a way to open the Katakana input table without changing the input language?

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.6.8), Mini 2011
