It's been removed. I don't know why, and I can't find a suitable substitute. I guess Apple wants us all use Firefox or Chrome.

Unfortunatley I don't think they read the Apple Suport Comunity pages...

if you want to send them feedback about this "upgrade" / downgrade, send feedback here...

you can download version 5 from CNET, however lion won't let you install it since "there's a "newer version of safari installed" already (so says the installer).  also, you can't delete safari because OS X supposedly needs it.  if someone can figure out how to delete Safari 6 then you could probably install v5 again.

since that will be difficult / impossible, i recommend restoring the old version of safari from time machine.  another qualifier: i don't know if that will work since i don't have my time machine HD with me (i'm traveling).

this is a pathetic ommision from apple.  who seriously thought that removing the activity window, one of the most useful elements of safari and one not found on most browsers, would be an improvement?  wake up safari team.

The video file doesnt HAVE to be in the "Other" folder.  At the website I allegedly use to capture streaming TV shows, the .mp4 file is in a folder titled "Frames", then in a sub-doc called "video_ext.php" ...Once I see the video string (ie: 324t8C341db.720.mp4) I click on it and get the full url from the right frame/pane.  I copy the URL and paste into Chrome...right click on paused video and choose "save as" and add the extension .mp4.

Nice info but I'm glad to still be using Snow Leopard. Won't be upgrading anytime soon…

Archived then uninstalled Safari 6 with AppDelete. Downloaded 5.17 from Cnet.  Installed 5.17 with Pacifist. Repaired prmissions.  All is well.  Back to Safari with 5.17 and an active activity window.

    Hi Peter

Ive tried following all your helpful (and wise) steps but Im unclear about Pacifist and how to get round the "you cant install that version as youre using Lion OSX" nonsense from Apple.

Can you offer any further detail - when Pacifist is open - as to what to do next?

    Kind Regards

    Dom

    Hi Dom,

Download Safari 5.17 and open the DMG image but don't run the installer package.  Open Pacifist.  Drag the installer package file onto Pacifist.  Once Pacifist loads the Safari package, click on the file listed named 'Contents of Safari...' to highlight it in the file list in Pacifist.  At the top of the Pacifist window, click install.  Pacifist will install the package it will probably ask a few times if you want to overwrite or replace existing like named files.  I answered yes to all of those.  When it is done, repair permissions.  I also restarted before I ran Safari, I'm not sure if that was necessary. This process worked for me.

    Regards,

    Peter
