Q: Can I download Leopard

and burn it onto a disc and install it on my iBook.

 

I am currently running Tiger (10.4.8) and need to upgrade to Leopard.

 

I have a 4.7G DVD and a Double Layer 8.5G DVD. (not sure what the double layer is for, but I do have one.)

 

I do not know how large the download is and if I can use a DVD instead of a CD.

Ok - this is hopefully the last comment on this thread.

 

It is done. I paid $15 for a burned double layer disc of 8.5G. It is from the store downtown which sells

new and refurbished Macs and is also a Dell Reseller.

 

It is NOT from retail. It is completely legal and above board.

 

So - it's done and it's fine.

PS Now all I need to do is up the memory to 1 or 2 Gigs and get a new battery.

Both of these are available on eBay from Top Rated Sellers.

 

Then once I get the pro back up and running I will have a decent running backup.

Cuz I really like the iBook. It's a tough little bugger.

    Leopard is available through e-bay and other sources other than Apple.  But because many are in the same boat you are, those who have it charge an arm and a leg (and a finger or two as well!).

    Only ML is a download.

     

    Lion was downloadable until ML became available but is not anymore (unless you downloaded it before the ML-shift), and even SL has only been DVD since Lion came out.

     

    The only Leopard that Apple provides is replacing original install disks (well, sometimes they replace Leopard install disks).

    I would stay away from those.

     

    Every post I have read about downloading Apple OSX from a non-Apple site says "NO NO NO NO!".  High risk of someone else inserting viruses or other bad software.  Also illegal, as Apple most likely does not enlist that site as approved distributor.

     

    Can I prove this? No.

     

    But further discussion likely is beyond the TermOfUse limits because of the external-source nature of what should be Apple-only software.

    Yeah, I hear ya there. I am aware of the illegality but I had not thought of the other stuff that could

    be on the disc. And of course the verynature of the discussion. That is a good point.

     

    I will check ebay and maybe craigslist too.

    PS I was prompted to upgrade now because my 2006 macbook pro needs a logic board. (It's in good shape and worth fixing.) So I thought it would be a good time to upgrade my iBook, which I am now using - cuz it runs fine - it just needs an upgrade to a newer OS (Tiger is a bit old) and more memory (1 or 2 gigs) to speed it up.

     

    I like having a spare.

    Good luck finding Leopard that is less than a mortgage payment.

     

    Ask back if you have "proper" () questions.

    DO NOT get the "Gray" disks, as they are the ones distributed with a given Mac, and ONLY work on that make and model Mac.  Unlikely to work with your iBook.

     

    You want the "Retail" version of Mac OS X

    There is no free or paid download of Leopard. You have to buy.

    If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:

    Caution - Leopard does not support classic mode. So, if you currently open OS 9 apps in classic mode, you won't be able to do this if you upgrade to Leopard.

    I know what you mean about the "grey" discs. They are computer specific. I have some that came with the iBook years back.
